Book Reviews of The Space Between Us: A Novel (P.S.)Book Review: Wonderful story, realistic characters Summary: 5 Stars
There is so much trash published today that when I finally find a great book I am amazed at how easily I could have passed it on. I just picked this book up by accident and I am glad I did. The story is splendid in its grimmness and although some have complained that the characters were not developed enough to jsutify their actions, to me they fit the scene perfectly. The ambient details were such that the characters became part of it and their actions were reasonable given their setting. I can only think of another book that carried the same weight called The Good Earth, that left me wondering about the misery and blackness of human nature.
Book Review: mesmerizing and impossibly beautiful... Summary: 5 Stars
The Space Between Us is a fascinating story but it's also poetry. Ms. Umrigar's sentances hit you with the force of a hurricane and completely envelop you in their astonishing beauty and precision. I kept returning to reread passages the way you gaze back at a brilliant painting just to take it in one more time. To be completely assailed by its rocket blues and screaming reds. To not even notice how the colors fuse and bewitch you, but they do and no one else would ever dream of putting these colors together like this but a madman or a genius. I believe Ms. Umrigar is the latter and what she has created is pure unrecycled art.
Book Review: Captivating and Moving Summary: 5 Stars
Yet another wonderful and moving novel by Thrity Umrigar. The story vividly unfolds on each page, and I found myself unable to put the book down. It tells the story of Bhima and Sera, two people who's lives are very much different, but in many ways the same. Yes, there is much sadness in this book. However, that sadness is there for a reason and is meant to be thought-provoking. It forces you evaluate your life and your relationships. It also helps you to better understand not only the person you are, but the kind of person you want to be. The character of Bhima moved me the most, and will live on in my heart.
Book Review: The Space Between Is Summary: 5 Stars
This was one of the best books I have read. My interest in India was deepened with this moving, insightful and detailed work of art about the relationship between families and the people who care for them over a life time. The secrets and lies that are carried within a family; and the universal longing for love and sweetness in all our lives. The poverty described in this book and of course in India is heart breaking and sobering. The choices one is forced to make just to be able to barely survive is a reality check for all of us. I applaud Thrity Umrigar and hope you will enjoy it also - it is a special treat.
Book Review: why education is important Summary: 2 Stars
The book, Space between us, is disjointed, character has no hidden spark, beaten by surroundings and life circumstanses. Eastern indian maids are slaves. the women are beaten for almost any reason and without education, living in the slums, one becomes a drone. i just do not get why books portray these women as mean, ruthless to the wives of the sons and cold hearted to the daughters. Read The Help for a better written portrayal of maids/cooks and their employers. the author spent a lot of time talking of the slums-very little words about the fancy house the maid worked in. would not recommend.
