Book Reviews of The Sweet Potato Queens' Book of Love

Book Review: Uproariously Funny!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Sweet Potato Queens are the South's answer to taste and decorum, well perhaps if you were sitting on the other side of the tracks. This book is pure unadulterated truth from the view of women in the know. Lets be honest isn't it the promise of a good time that keeps the man coming back. Well the Queens have a "Promise" that is guaranteed to work on any man alive.

Along with the famous Promise they teach us how to cook, again we are held to a standard that will harden your arteries as you turn each page. I did receive a bit of wisdom that the author tells us her grandfather imparted to her, not a very wordy man he turned to her one day and said, "Be particular". Now think about the wisdom in those two little words. They fit into every aspect of your life from sex to food.

This book is written with the most enjoyable flair I have ever come across. It just brightens your day to read a chapter or two and I promise you will laugh out loud. A sheer delight in every way. Kelsana 4/29/01

Book Review: A wannabe, but a queen none the less
Summary: 5 Stars

Green sequin mini-dresses, stuffed to enhance certain body parts, teased fiery-red wigs, majorette boots and bright pink lipstick. Sound like the product of a young child playing dress-up? Not in the least. This outfit is just one of the many things that set the Sweet Potato Queens apart from a typical 'Southern Belle.'

"The Sweet Potato Queen's Book of Love" is a guide to such important topics as "The true magic words guaranteed to get any man to do your bidding," "Men who may need killing, quite frankly," and "What to eat when tragedy strikes, or just for entertainment."

Jill Conner Browne is amusingly blunt in "The Sweet Potato Queen's Book of Love." If easily offended, this light-hearted, but sometimes humorously crude, book may not be your best choice for reading. But, if you are looking for an easy read and an easy laugh, this is a perfect book and one that I will definitely read again.

Book Review: Not as good as I had hoped it would be
Summary: 1 Stars

This book is poorly written and to say the least not entertaining at all. It is very vulgar and not funny at all. I enjoy Rebecca Welles writing so very much, that I had hoped this would be good. The jacket and back of the book make it sound like a good read. I had to force myself to finish this book. All Jill Browne thinks about is sleeping with men and how to get them to do what you want them to. I cannot in good conscience recommend this book to anyone. I had planned to give it to my sister, but I would never give this trash to anyone. The reviews that I read were good. I have never written a review before, but I could not let the great customer reviews that this book got stand. Naming everyone Tammy was also pretty stupid. This is, according to the back jacket, irreverent, but not funny. Don't waste your time or money buying this book. They must pay the people who comment on the cover and jacket a lot of money!

Book Review: I laughed 'til I cried!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Another fast summer read!! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to try out Miss Tammy's recipes! I wished that I had read this two years ago when it was first published. I think it definitely has changed some of my attitudes! In fact, tomorrow I am going to have breakfast at a new place on indy's westside. (It looks outrageous-colorwise and the fact that there are fake palm trees.) Anyway, it has motorcycle parking. Not that I am into cyclists but it sure can spice up some conversations for the day! Shortly, I will head out to the local "upscale" bookstore to pick up Miss Browne's second book. Yes, I called ahead and they are holding one for me. Meanwhile, on my way home, I will pick up ingredients for the Butterfinger cookie recipe. YUM!!! For laughs and curiosities if you have always played by THE GOOD GIRLS RULES, get a copy of the SWEET POTATO QUEENS-BOOK OF LOVE!!! Enjoy!

Book Review: Sometimes too much is too much
Summary: 3 Stars

I am going against the popular opinion with my review of this book. I know it is not a book you would want your mamma see you read (she's barely recovered from me getting suspended for "Valley of the Dolls" in 1973). This celebration of southern womanhood is indeed a full of laughs. I mean tears running down your cheeks, snorting at your desk at work laughs. Beware,it will be grabbed out of your hands because you cannot breathe enough to tell your co-workers what has set off this laughing.....if you can actually repeat the phrase or story that triggered the laughing fit. There lies my dilemma. It is full of great humor, wonderful receipes and women you want to emulate. You will want to go buy your own tiara. It is full of the zest for life that we all want. I found that repeated vulgarity, even in this funny context was grating, and ultimately detracted from the book. Can I still keep my tiara?
