Book Reviews of The Tenth Muse: My Life in FoodBook Review: The love of life, good food, and cooking. Summary: 4 Stars
If you enjoy cooking, if you enjoy browsing through cook books, if the secrets of great meals excite you, and above all if love good food then this is a book for you. It is not only about good food and cooking, it is a memoir of a fascinating woman who lives an interesting life, and has the writing skills to make her account a page turner.
For me Julia Child is a hero. When my wife and I talk about cooking, my wife often says, "Yes, I know Julia Child said to do it this way therefore that is the way it must be done, right?" Fortunately my wife has a will of her own.
I had to read about the woman who discovered my hero and helped to make her famous. There are insights into a lot of other wonderful cooks that Judith helped to get published.
If you are a cooking freak this is a must read book, if you just love to cook and to read about cooking this is a must read book, if you enjoy an interesting story about an interesting woman this is a good book for you.
Why only four stars? There are some parts of the book that I feel could have been left out, but that is an opinion with which many will differ.
Book Review: I bought a few Knopf cookbooks! Summary: 4 Stars
I found that as I was reading this book I wanted to investigate the cookbooks the author played a part in developing and editing. So far I've got Nela's, Jaffrey's and an updated version of Roden's Middle Eastern cookbook - which looks lovely just sitting on my coffee table! This book is a bit heavy on the name dropping, and some of the photos are a tad odd, but it is interesting to read about how this genre of "book" evolved. Jones guides us into the minds of great cooks and writers - allowing us to learn about their thinking processes - as well as their own foibles and insecurities.
Book Review: Addictive Reading Summary: 5 Stars
I loved loved loved this book, it was fascinating to read Judith Jone's past travels in France and Europe whilst having my taste buds tantalised with the recipes that she shares. Her life as a food editor to some of the best known and relatively unknown cooks from the past and the present. I have recommended this book to my "foodie" friends as something they just have to read whilst also telling my friends in general how much I enjoyed this book and that they might too.
Book Review: MUSINGS ABOUT COOKS Summary: 3 Stars
The Tenth Muse offers a reminiscence of the author's life of food and the people that entered her life through the cooking and eating of good food. Not a writer who "made it on her own" however; Ms.Jones had the privilege of influential contacts that helped her cement her career in the publishing field. Those introductions certainly led the way to more (including her husband) and gave her credibility in the field of food and publishing.
Book Review: The Tenth Muse Summary: 5 Stars
I had no idea that Judith Jones was responsible for publishing some of the finest cookbook authors of our time. I just finished reading it and plan to enjoy some of the classic receipes.
