Book Reviews of The Terror: A NovelBook Review: Just okay Summary: 3 Stars
I think Dan Simmons is a talented author and I do enjoy historical novels, but this book seems to have lost something along the way. I was hoping for more horror and more excitement. "The Terror" detailed the expedition across the Artic and how these men were stuck in the ice. The first 300 pages showed promise but then it teetered off. I didn't mind that each chapter was from a different person's point of view, but I didn't feel for the characters to really care about them. I lost interest until the last 100 pages when it became intriguing again. Nine hundred pages plus, was a lot to read but not riveting enough to recommend.
Book Review: best book I've read this year Summary: 5 Stars
I don't normally read books of this genre. I'm more the elves and hobbits type reader. I picked this up out of curiosity and have now spent the last two nights staying up way too late reading the darn thing. I've even toted it around the office telling people they had to get the book! The characters grab your attention from the get go, no one-dimensional boring protagonists here! You can read the plot highlights from the other posts...all I can say is that not since reading Stephen Kings The Stand have I been so engrossed in a book.
Book Review: a very good thriller Summary: 4 Stars
C Simmons novel The Terror is a very good thriller. Based on the doomed Franklin expedition, this novel is full of wquality characterization, tense addction descriptive detail and a mood of impending doom. It is also well written stylistically. Some of the graphic descriptions of gore are overdone and the novel is too long it could be shortened by almost 100 pages but it still is very good and I W had no trouble turning the pages. When Simmons avoids crime fiction like Darwins Blade or the JOE kurtz novels, he is alomost always a winner
Book Review: NOT a horror tale, nor a chiller or thriller! Summary: 2 Stars
Just so you know, this novel is NOT a horror story - nor is it a chiller or supernatural kind of story. It is a tale of arctic exploration and the trials and tribulations involved, with some native/Eskimo mysticism thrown in at the end. If you are looking for a horror story (and the title of this novel has probably duped a lot of people) this is NOT the subject of this book. Just wanted to warn you so you don't spend your money on something you think is one thing when in fact it is quite another.
Book Review: Too long, too bleak Summary: 2 Stars
I love books about the arctic and antarctic. I love adventure stories. I couldn't make it through the Terror. Somewhat compelling early, the fate of the crew, almost hopeless, goes to completely hopeless at about page 500. Very long odds are cut to zero in a way that made me uninterested in reading further to discover how the crew actually met their demise. I walked out of the cafe and dropped the book in the nearest rubbish bin, unwilling even to subject anyone else to the Terror.
