Book Reviews of The Terror: A NovelBook Review: Great read--a few flaws Summary: 4 Stars
I loved the book, but I would like to raise the issue of fanciful geography. The author described temperatures that were unrealistically low, like -100F in April. It is very doubtful that it ever got that cold in January, much less April. Another little glitch: the description of endlessly long arctic nights in March. The days and nights in late March are the same length in the arctic as they are on the equator. That's why March 21st (and September 21st) is called the Equinox.
Book Review: Absorbing read, engaging characters Summary: 5 Stars
I greatly admire the effort and research that went into this absorbing historical tale. The period details are rich, and the characters are fascinating. The last few chapters dealing with an alternative possibility to the fate of Francis Crozier are particularly imaginative, and a nice reward for sticking with the novel's length. I shall be looking for more of Simmons' works,
Book Review: Not "The Terror" but "The Torture" Summary: 1 Stars
The monster wasn't scary or even really identified. The plot was way too long. The book was not in the least bit interesting from a historical aspect and it was far from being "terrifying". This book was a huge disappointment. The reader experiences more torture in getting through this book than the characters experience in its pages.
Book Review: Classic. Summary: 5 Stars
Tour de force is the best way I can describe this novel. It is perhaps the greatest achievement of Simmons's long career. Both a vivid and realistic historical novel and a gripping supernatural thriller. Don't let the novel's length scare you off, it is a page turner. If you like historical ficture or horror, its a must read.
Book Review: Excellently written, the story really grabbed me Summary: 5 Stars
I read this book after a friend recommended it, and I loved it. I read 20 - 30 books a year, and this one was the best I've read in several years. It took a few chapters for me to get into it, but then I was hooked. I normally don't write reviews of books, but this is one I wish I could read again for the first time.
