Book Review: A Complete Bore

This was the first novel I have read by Hoffman, and I have to say I was completely bored to tears. The plot may have had some potential in the hands of another writer, but the writing style used was just completely and utterly dull. The whole thing was a sleeper and written with no emotion whatsoever. I forced myself through it in the hopes that at some point something would change and Hoffman would out some sort of emphasis or excitement somewhere! But no, nothing. I'd rather watch paint dry. I've given this book 4 stars for the beauty of the prose but must confess that I prefer, these days, to read books which uplift me and make me feel happy, rather than near perfect works which leave me feeling sad and hollow inside. There are three stories which interconnect through their characters and run backwards from 1999 to the 50's. The main theme is unrequited love and it all left me feeling miserable and empty. As good as this book undoubtedly is, I felt like reaching for the anti depressants after it ended.Book Review: Not the best Hoffman, but readable

I don't think this is the best Alice Hoffman, but I certainly enjoyed it more than Blue Diary, Skylight Confessions and some of her other recent books. I did enjoy the background info on some of the characters as she went back and forth from the present to the past and back again, but the ending, I thought, was very inconclusive and flat.
Book Review: My first and definitely not last Alice Hoffman book

This was a beautiful, moving book. I really wanted to savor it but unfortunately finished it in two days anyway because I couldn't put it down. The writing manages to convey the mood and each character's emotion without being overly wordy.
I've been aware of Alice Hoffman for many years but for some reason never picked up one of her books until now. I have a hard time finding authors I really like and I'm excited to start reading her prior novels.
Book Review: Interesting read

This is the first time I have read anything by this author, so picked up the book with no expectations. The book is made up of 3 stories, interrelated but never fully linked. Each story is interesting and they are complete stories so you leave each part of the book satisfied with the conclusion - whereas many short story collections, either leave you wanting more or incomplete.
Worth a read and encourages me to read more by Alice Hoffman.
