Book Reviews of The Thirteenth Tale: A NovelBook Review: Just what I've been waiting for...... Summary: 5 Stars
Finally, LITERATURE!!! Real, classic, vibrant literature! Modern writings lack so much of the depth and color that classic literature retains. As someone who rallies to antiquarian bookstores seeking a book to "fall" into, to find this wonderful find was such a joy. It lived up to my expectations and hopes. Very like Dickens and Wilkie Collins (one of my all times favorites) this novel immersed me into the lives of the characters. I FELT, and SMELLED and HEARD. It was wonderful.
I opted to purchase the audiobook and was so pleased to hear the voice of Lynn Redgrave. Her voice was the epitome of the character of Vida Winter. I could listen to her read or speak for hours and hours. I hope she makes this a second career!!!
By all means, if you enjoy a book that will take you to another world, another time, another place, escape into this book, you will not be disappointed.
Book Review: unsympathetic characters Summary: 2 Stars
No thanks. This book is full of psychotic, inbred half-wits. The two main characters take themselves so seriously. Not a badly-written book--just unsympathetic characters. Not a one I liked.
Emily Bronte could pull off these characters: I don't know how she did it but she did.
There's no time structure in this book: I had no idea of dates and ages of the characters. I had no idea what style of dress to put them in in my head. I'd put 'em in Edwardian dress and then find out I should put them in flapper gear.
If it's modern day, how come the main character still relies on basically quill pens and carrier pigeons? I didn't like this--at least address why she doesn't use cell phones and computers. If it isn't present day, I need to know this.
Did not finish listening. Feh.
Book Review: Incredible Read! Spell-binding! Summary: 5 Stars
I like to "read" while I drive.... and boy did I take some long drives while enjoying this incredible novel. I bought it on a whim and it drew me in at the first sentence. Half way through it, I ordered the hard back for my library... I was so impressed! I couldn't wait to get up in the morning to go out for another read! I needed to hear more secrets that would unfold.... this was my kind of ghost story... a true mystery!
How could this really be a first time novel for Diane Setterfield? It is written with such brilliance. I can't wait for her next book. I highly recommend the Thirteenth Tale in either paper or on audio.... the voices on audio are fabulous!!! JMHO //(*_*)\\
Book Review: Fantastic Read Summary: 5 Stars
Since I do not have the talent to give a synopsis of The Thirteenth Tale, I can only say it is definitely a "Tale" you don't want to miss. It has an air of mystery with enough twists and turns to keep you wondering what is going to happen next. Sadly, as with all good books, eventually it does end. You will wish for more. I have loaned this book to three other people, and all of them became totally engrossed in the story. We all want more from Ms. Setterfield!
Book Review: Beautifully written, captivating, 4 1/2 stars Summary: 4 Stars
We (my wife and I) "read" this book on audio CD, while on a car trip. We didn't want to stop. And when we did, we usually waited for a chapter to end before turning off the audio. This is a book you won't want to put down. So make sure you start reading, when you have the time to complete the book. The conclusion leaves a lot to the imagination, and could have been stronger - but who cares, the tale is so well written!
