Book Review: A Classicly Written Novel
Summary: 5 Stars
This novel is absolutely wonderful. I'm ashamed to say this, but I've only recently read it. A relative had an old copy of this novel, and I decided to give it a try. I must say that I was very hesitant at reading this novel because I remember a few parts of the movie from my childhood, and it didn't interest me in the least. I must admit the movie is decent, but I do prefer the novel.
This is a story of three generations of a family. At the heart of the story are Meggie and Father Ralph. It is because of these two characters that the book is primarily based upon. I will try not to spoil the story, but Meggie and Father Ralph love one another. Will he end up leaving the church he loved dearly? Is Father Ralph willing to turn away Meggie to become the perfect priest?
There are numerous other characters that one will find in this novel, and I must say that I would have loved to learn more about Meggie's brothers---especially her eldest brother Frank. Every character in this novel is well written and will make you want to know more about many--if not all--of the characters.
There is heartbreak, tragedy, and misery in this novel. But this novel also includes love---family love, romantic love, and love of one's roots and land. It's a beautiful story and I highly recommend it.
