Book Reviews of The Thorn Birds

Book Review: A great man with a wonderful woman
Summary: 4 Stars

This is one of the books I read in my midteen that affected my view point and value for love. Ralgh is the most ideal male in the world for woman I think until he discarded his meggie. But still he is such a perfect man who I will never really understand. His intelligence and ellegance will be devastating for almost every woman and his love to Meggie, a sweet little girl is so adorable. The fact that he chose HIS lord made me wonder what love really is. Does he love her or does he not. That confuses me. But still it is so remarkale when they meet each other at the end of the story. Is all the sacrifice and exteme pain of the thorn bird worth evething they get at the end? I can't tell the answer. I wish you would enjoy the book.

Book Review: Wanted to love this book but felt it too outdated...
Summary: 1 Stars

I went into this book knowing its a beloved classic therefore I really wanted to love it; for the first half of the book I really did. I felt connected to the characters and thought the author's ability to capture both time and place was supurb; she really made the Australian Outback come alive. I truly felt the Cleary family hardships, their bitterness and secrets. However, after awhile I found it somewhat outdated. I can't put my finger on precisely what made me feel this way, but perhaps it was the unrealistic and weak dialogue that finally did me in. Or perhaps Father Ralph's somewhat obsessive feelings towards the young Meggie made me feel uncomfortable. Regardless, despite its cult-like status, I simply can't recommend this one.

Book Review: AN OUTSTANDING LOVE STORY WITH SUBSTANCE, DEPTH, AND TRUTH.
Summary: 5 Stars

Colleen McCullough certainly knows how to weave an exceptional and intricate story of a true but frustrating love; in this instance we read about a classic example of the torture and tragedy two people have to endure due to the attitude of the Roman Catholic Church. This is a very telling tale, and the reader needs to look beyond the physical and emotional attraction between Father Ralph and Megan and straight into a stiff-necked Roman institution that prevents normal men from expressing themselves sexually while married to the woman they love. Of course, the book didn't end the way I wanted it to; how could it? I wanted them to get married and live happily ever after, but, instead, both of their lives were unnecessarily destroyed.

Book Review: The Thorn Birds; An Australian "Gone With The Wind"...
Summary: 5 Stars

I, like millions of other people around the world, watched the addictive mini-series starring Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward first before delving into the book. And I feel in love for life... A wonderfully written, captivating tale of eternally forbidden love, it is truly one of the most unforgettable fictional love stories of all time, right after Scarlett and Rhett. I think Colleen should right a sequel, but it would not be the same without Father Ralph. The Thorn Birds will forever stay in my mind, and every couple of years or so, I pick up my dog-eared, paperback copy and dive right in again. I would recommend this book to anyone in the world interested in an enticing, moving love story that transcends time.

Book Review: The Thorn Birds - An Epic Novel
Summary: 5 Stars

Last night I finished The Thorn Birds, and I thought that..along with being one of the best novels i've ever read..it provides us with an insight into human behavior and emotion. After reading hundreds of books in my sixteen years, i thought there wouldn't be another book to really interest me in the way that Koontz and Grisham do.

This book has it all. Family drama, heartbreak, and such strong female characters that are usually absent in a lot of books today. I especially feel sad for Meggie and the Cardinal, Ralph de Bricassart, because they cannot express their love because Ralph is tied to his duties to the Catholic Church.

If you're going to read a book, make sure this is one on your list!
