Book Reviews of The Tiger RisingBook Review: The Tiger Rising Reviewed by Olivia Summary: 5 Stars
One boy, one girl, one tiger. In the award winning book The Tiger Rising, there is a boy Rob living in a motel (Kentucky star) in Florida. Rob was on his way to school as he wondered through the hazy woods and he stumbles across a tiger in a locked up cage. Rob doesn't know what to do, he assumes the tiger belongs to the owner of the motel; the owner always looks for ways to attract new people to his motel. He might be using the tiger for that. He was right.
After Robs mother dies, he doesn't express himself at all its as if he keeps all of his feelings in a suitcase. He thinks about saying it but keeps it inside his mind. Rob and his father don't have much money. His father tries to work a lot to support Rob and let him have a good life. Robs father can barely makes enough money to put food on the table. Rob changes in a lot of ways at the end of the book.
The author of this book, Kate DiCamillo, writes this story so well it made it hard for me to put the book down. The author makes it so hard to put it down because at the end of each chapter it keeps you thinking, what's he going to do next?
Rob meets a new girl in school, Sistine. He tells her about the tiger. Sistine is determined to convince Rob to try to let the tiger go. The owner of the tiger gives Rob the keys, so Rob can feed the tiger. Sistine tells him that's this is his chance to let the tiger go. Rob asked one of the workers in the motel of what he should do. She tells him a story of what happened when she let an animal go. The worker went through a situation when she let a bird go and the bird died; the bird didn't know how to survive by itself. Rob is in a difficult situation he doesn't know what to do.
The theme Kate DiCamillo gets across the book is that you shouldn't be afraid to express yourself, and that sometimes you have to let something's go you cant hold onto things forever.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes books that leave you hanging, and likes a good story line. The Tiger Rising was a great book. I would also recommend this book to someone who likes books that are exciting!
After Rob thinks about what he should do, he realizes that maybe he should express himself, and not keeps his feelings in his suitcase. Robs feelings can't be locked up forever...just like the tiger. What do you think Rob should do? Should he leave the tiger alone? Or should he let the tiger go? What will happen if he lets the tiger go? To find out what Rob does read the book, The Tiger Rising.

The Tiger Rising
by:Kate DiCamillo
Rob the main character of tiger rising lost his mom around 6 months ago.Him and his fother moved from jacksonville to Lister. Rob is very quiet and bottles things up, he doesnt have many friends and he hates school however he comes across a tiger who suddenly changes his life.
Robby lives in a motel with his father, for now until they can start there life again. Roby in school meets a girl named Sistine who just moved into the town of Lister. At first she hates robby, she even sticks her tounge out at him in class. He soon relizes she is going through the same thing he is by being bullies by the kids in school. Robys bullies are norrton and his brother billy. They constantly bully him on the bus. One day during school roby sees sistine getting bullied and helps her out he begins to change alittle in the story from being afraid and scared at that point to actually saying something to these bullies. However although sistine and him begin to hang out after school he still keeps a barrier up and he keeps " his suite case closed". Robby wasnt shure if he should tell sistine about his tiger that he found so he brought her to see it. The tiger is in the woods far back behind the motel" kentucky star". The tigers cage was rusted and old with a wooden slab for a roof. The tiger justs paces back and forth every day , sistine wants to let him out but robby doesnt want to get cought by the owner of the motel Beauchamp....Will they finnaly let the tiger out? Will robby and sistine stick up to their bullies? Will robby ever "open his suitcase" and not keep his thoughts, feelings, emotions so locked up? Read on and see...
I liked the book Tiger Rising, however i thought it was alittle on the slow side meaning it took a while for anything to happen. It didnt really keep me interested. However i think this book would be good for teens who are going through hard times and are just trying to "find themsleves". Robby is like every teen ,just wanting to fit im he just has to losen up and figure it out.
Book Review: Much better alternatives are available Summary: 2 Stars
I must confess that I was really not all that impressed with this book. It was little more than a nice children's story with pretty good character development, but it seems that the author was not interested in developing the story more. She also could have done a much better job of explaining the character Beauchamp (the antagonist).I thought that the illustration of Rob's (the main character) emotions being locked inside a psychological suitcase, though initially creative, soon became over-used, worn out, and emotionally manipulative. The book does have a few things going for it (hence, the two stars). Probably the main thing in its favor is the story of how Rob overcomes his grief and unhappiness through helping his friends. However, this is the second book in a row by this author to have such a story. And this is, in fact, the second book by this author. The first was BECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE. The themes were very similar, as were the characters, except that in WINN-DIXIE, they were far more interesting, and the story was much better developed. I look forward with eager anticipation to what Mrs. DiCamillo's next book will be like (I believe it will be available in late 2003), because, having read WINN-DIXIE, I know she can write much better than TIGER RISING. Another fantastic alternative (with similar themes) is BRIDGE TO TEREBITHIA by Katherine Paterson. It is also easy reading without taking away from the complexities of the characters or the captivation of the plot. On one last point, having read several Amazon reviews before reading the book, I was very disappointed to read the outcome of the story which one reviewer had put in his review (without any warning to the reader whatsoever). I wish reviewers would have a little more consideration for people who have not yet read the book. The purpose of reviews is to inform those who may wish to purchase the product, not to destroy their enjoyment of it.
Book Review: A beautiful tale of loss and healing Summary: 4 Stars
The Tiger Rising is more of a short story than a novel (128 pgs). In this book young Rob Horton endures his lot in life with little or no complaint until a remarkable day when he finds a real, caged tiger and meets a tiger in the form of a girl named Sistine. In its brief pages DiCamillo allows us to enter into the lives of a small band of characters who, like the tiger, are caged in one-form or another and who long to taste true freedom. DiCamillo's writing style allows the reader to feel an immediate bond with the main characters and allows one to easily empathize with their hurts and struggles. DiCamillo has written a novel about loss and grief and the risks involved with allowing oneself to open up to the healing power of honesty in relationships. This is a children's novel and one easy for the intended age group (9-12) to understand, but its deeper meanings require a higher maturity level to fully understand. The symbolism is, at times, blatantly obvious but by the end of the book DiCamillo leaves the reader with many different ideas to contemplate. This book would be a great one to discuss in a classroom setting with children or even adults as the messages presented are universal regardless of one's age.
Kate DiCamillo has rapidly become one of those authors who doesn't write quick enough for me. She hasn't been writing long enough to have a large bibliography but her writing is of such quality that I can imagine myself reading her books again and again. The fact that all 3 of her published children's novels have been nominated for Newbery awards attests to the quality of her writing. In looking at reader's reviews on Amazon.com this is the least favored of her 3 novels and it still averages 4 out of 5 stars in the ratings. I highly recommend all her novels, whether you're a child, a grown-up, or a grown-up reading to a child, you cannot go wrong with Kate DiCamillo.
Book Review: The Tiger Rising review Summary: 4 Stars
Kentucky Star...a motel south of nowhere.
That's Rob Horton's life. You can read all about it in the award winning book The Tiger Rising. A boy that's had nothing but misfortune in his life but one morning it unlocks into something superior!
When Robs mother died him and his father struggle, barely making ends meet doing extra jobs at the motel. Neither one of them like to talk about her. Rob has moved to Lister from Jacksonville. He doesn't have any friends, and he gets bullied everyday on the bus. When he finally gave up on life, a sprinkle of hope came in a very unusual looking package, her name was Sistine Bailey. She didn't look twice at Rob until she found out about the tiger! In the end they knew more about each other then they knew about them selves.
After robs mom died he put all his sorrow and feelings into an enormous suitcase ....now he has the tiger to sit on it and keep it closed. I can hear Kate DiCamillo through out the story narrating every word.
An ordinary morning turned out to be the one that changes his life.
He found a tiger...a real life tiger. In the back of the Kentucky star motel.
Is the tiger real or is all the heat getting to robs head? Well...the tiger is
Real. But the question is... who's tiger is it? Rob knows he has to tell someone and fast! But who? Someone he trusts, Sistine Bailey. Rob doesn't know whether to let the tiger go or leave him to live his life in a cage. Sistine is determined to let the tiger go but only with the help of Rob.
The tiger is the cause of a few things one of them is...a best friend.
Through the book rob is learning to leave the old things behind and look forward to the new. I recommend this book for people who want to learn about a boy a tiger and a best friend. This book gets more astonishing on every page making you want to read it all.
