Book Review: From Linda Rentschler (Mother, Jitters)

When Corey Wails learns his mother's cancer has returned, it doesn't exactly break his heart. Her constant criticism and uneven temperament have him waiting out his high-school sentence, dreaming of leaving home for a pitching scholarship at the end of his senior year. Baseball, his dog, and his girlfriend represent all that is good in his life, and Corey eventually doesn't even return home at the end of the day. He moves from school, to practice, to his girlfriend's house, and from game to game in the playoffs, as though he has no family at all.
But as his mother's condition deteriorates, Corey takes his father's advice and begins listening to her apologies. He recognizes that he can lessen her pain if he could only manage to open his heart. With an ever-dimming prognosis, Corey wades deeply into the details of Linda Wail's life, hearing of her disappointments, her regrets, and her wishes to be a better mother. He becomes so active a participant in her illness, he even accepts being thrown off the baseball team when he is late because he was helping her. As the teen matures into the son who holds his mother's hand and promises to visit the places she always wanted to see, he assures her, "I dream the same as you do."
Cropp has written a poignant coming of age tale with emotions that befit a teenager's angst at losing the mother he is only beginning to know and like. He captures the confusion of a young man whose world is spiraling, and punctuates it with realistic scenes where cancer takes control of a household, a family, a teenage life. Cropp's novel is a reminder not to be casual with time, dreams, or especially love.

Perhaps in the final days of our life we are granted the wisdom to see all that could have been, and all that should have been. The price is dear for such wisdom. Diagnosed with terminal cancer at the age of thirty eight, Linda Wails has only one dying wish?to make amends with her seventeen year old son Corey. For years they have struggled with one another, but the time is now or never to learn anew what it means to be a mother and what it takes to be a son. Such irony, that a woman should find her true beginning at the end of her life. Such justice, that a selfish young man should find within himself a pounding heart he never knew he had.
