Book Reviews of The Tin Star

Book Review: a must have
Summary: 5 Stars

I won't go into details of the story but I believe most fans of romance books will enjoy this story (and if you are new to homoerotic stories, this book is a good introduction). There is no stereotyping of homosexual relations in the book or feminizing of the characters making it a pleasure to read. The characters are interesting and support the story line. The "love story" between the two main characters has depth and detail enough to hold the attention of the reader and the author is not shy when it comes to the love scenes. The relationships between the larger cast of characters supports the story and is interesting in its own right. My recommendation buy it, read it, enjoy.

Book Review: Fantastic, but Implausable.
Summary: 4 Stars

(Spoiler near the end!!) This book was actually a lot more entertaining, and funny then I thought it would be. Obviously I thought it was just going to be another m/m smut book, but -damn-, was I wrong. I mean, of course it's on the smutty side, but there's also a real romance. I gave it a 4 star rating however (Even though this is totally one of my new favorite books), because I thought that their relationship moved to quickly, and it was a little implausable. I also don't condone getting a "Property Of" tattoo. It's like a kiss of death. Ack. Other then that though, it was highly entertaining and if you're into "that kind of thing", you should definantly check this book out.

Book Review: Endearing Romance
Summary: 4 Stars

J.L. Langley has created a romance that surprised me with its depiction of tenderness and humor between two loving men. The characters are sensible, realistic and likable. The sex sizzles but never loses its emotional depth, a great accomplishment for any romance writer but particularly with regard to homosexual stories, which often lean toward anatomical descriptions and language. Conflict and its resolution are well executed, but the author's greatest achievement is the portrayal of acceptance with undaunted affection. The characters' friends and family members care about them with an edge of gentle humor, an admirable goal for our society.

Book Review: Pleasant and Romantic Surprise
Summary: 4 Stars

I generally don't read much gay fiction because either the writing is horrible or there is too much gratitous sex - or both.

However, this was a pleasant surprise. Although the writing is not so hot, Mr. Langley sure knows how to write a sweet romantic tale where the sex is in such good taste and embellishes the story between these two unlikely lovers.

I can't say the story is plausible or that the secondary characters are more than just cardboard; but Jaime and Ethan are well developed, real and vulnerable. After around page 50 I couldn't put it down until I was finished. It was a sweet story to sleep on.

Book Review: how bad can it get?
Summary: 1 Stars

Ok so the book isn't totally dreadful, there is at least the merest thread of a story, wrapped around lots of sex, and I'm sure that is what most of these reviewers were looking for, thus their positive reviews. But while sex scenes are fine now and then this book is mostly sex scenes with only a hint of a plot. Those looking for a well-written story without the excessive sex should look elsewhere, quickly. I will say this book bears a striking resemblance to Longhorns by Victor J. Banis, the only difference being the timeframe in which each book takes place. This book was written first though. Either way, you have been warned.
