Book Reviews of The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook: Your Self-Treatment Guide for Pain Relief, Second EditionBook Review: Very disappointing!!!! Summary: 1 Stars
As a Certified Massage Therapist, and former Registered Respiratory Therapist, it has always been of interest to me to continue learning and discovering new ways to help my clients who suffer with chronic pain.
When I read Mr. Davies book on Trigger Point Therapy, there were many things that I agreed with. This book is thoughtful and certainly well-written. Mr. Davies is also a Certified Massage Therapist, a former piano technician who in his own chronic pain, sought a way to heal himself after many disappointments with traditional therapies. He purchased Dr. Janet Travel's medical books on Trigger Point Therapy. He began working on himself using these medical books and became a Certified Massage Therapist to gain credibility when teaching the method to others.
I agree with Mr. Davies on some key issues such as the fact that pharmaceuticals only mask pain and do not cure the cause of the pain. I also agree that many doctors and other health care providers are "out of the loop" as to finding the actual cause of pain and how to cure pain.
I was in full agreement with Mr. Davies until he states in his book "almost any intervention will affect a trigger point as long as it is a physical intervention" and goes on to say "nothing subtle will do."
Mr. Davies explains that there are several methods to give relief to painful trigger points such as trigger point injection with a mild dose of Procaine, a local anesthetic. He describes the drawbacks of that therapy, such as pain at the injection site, the short term results and the fact that the trigger point can be so tough that the needle bounces off and the patient is injected at the wrong site. OUCH!
The next method is the spray and stretch in which the patient is sprayed with a refrigerant and then the affected muscle is stretched. That also sounds to be me to be very invasive and if a muscle is that tight, stretching it by force could tear the muscle tissue or cause damage to the ligaments and tendons of the muscle being stretched.
Finally, he states that the safest and most effective method of Trigger Point Therapy (according to Travel and Simons, the authors of the medical books called The Trigger Point Manual, Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction) is deep stroking massage directly to the trigger point.
In Chapter 3, Mr. Davies states that "pain caused by massage is beneficial." He also states that if you have a particularly bad trigger point, you should try to give it "a good initial shot of pain." He advises you to to work on the painful spot of a level of 7 our of a scale of 1-10.
He admits that deep massage may occasionally cause brusing in tender areas and this is usually nothing to worry about.
I regret to openly disagree with a colleague but I too am a Certified Massage Therapist and have been in practice for over 9 years. My previous work experience as a Registered Respiratory Therapist from 1994-1999 has given me the experience of knowing the human body.
Our bodies do not like pain. They do not respond postively to pain. They react to protect against pain. Causing pain is counter-intuitive.
After only one year into my new career in massage therapy, I began to have extremely painful forearms. They burned and hurt even when I wasn't working. I was having trouble with tasks as small as holding a hairbrush. A friend of mine, also a massage therapist (yes, I had tried massage to ease the pain in my forearms) recommended a book written by a Physical Therapist named Bernard Schatz. I immediately purchased the book, read it and finally understood why the deep tissue massage I was getting on my forearms was not working! My body was fighting back aginst being made to hurt even more.
As strange as it may seem, I discovered that Mr. Schatz lived in my own town of Charlottesville, VA. I was so amazed that the idea of gentle work could cure my pain that I made an appointment with Mr. Schatz for a treatment session. After 4, two-hour sessions, not only was my pain gone but I had learned to do the technique on myself. While I could have learned the technique using the detailed instruction of Mr. Schatz's book, as a massage therapist I wanted to experience it for myself. I was so astonished by the results that I asked to become Mr. Schatz's apprentice to which he agreed.
After 4 months of working with Mr. Schatz on all of his patients, he granted me the title of Certified Schatz Technique Practitioner. We went into private practice together for over two years until Mr. Schatz left our practice to focus on making his new book, Chronic Pain Self-treatment, Including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome even more user-friendly.Chronic Pain Self-treatment Including Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: -The Schatz Technique
This new book is packed with real life case histories, drawings by the author that show you exactly where and how to work on yourself and a recommendation by Patch Adams, M.D.
For the record, Mr. Schatz and I have had no business relationship for several years and I will receive no compensation for the sale of his new book. I simply want to help get the word out to people who suffer with chronic pain that they CAN learn how cure their pain.
I know this gentle technique works because I see the results in my clients. I still do regular massage for my clients who request it and it is a wonderful way for people to relax and feel pampered. Massage does not release the fibrotic tissues that press on nerves and cause chronic pain.
One client of mine had suffered with chronic migraine headaches for over 20 years and had 3, two-hour sessions with me. Her migraines were cured. I have many stories of clients who had been in pain for years requiring only one or two sessions with me and their pain was gone. Some cases have been tougher because the client's chronic pain was in many places throughout their bodies and required several sessions to address all the areas of pain. All of my clients are discharged knowing how to work on themselves which is especially important for people who are employed in jobs that require repetitive motion.
If you can rid yourself of pain using a gentle approach like The Schatz Technique, it seems to be that is the route of choice.
I am so grateful to have discovered the new information in Mr. Schatz's newest book because not only has Mr. Schatz added to the information of his previous book, I have learned new and faster ways to keep myself and my clients from a life of pain. I help others by first alleviating their pain and then teach them how to work on themselves to stay free just in case they have future flare ups. This may not seem to be good for business but by actually discharging clients, referrals are created and I have no need to advertise my services.
I also receive referrals from physicians and other health care professionals because my clients have reported back to them that I do something that REALLY works. Proof that Mr. Schatz's technique is indeed a technique that's effective.
If you're going to spend your hard-earned money to learn how to live your life without pain by treating yourself, Mr. Schatz's book Chronic Pain Self-treatment is the book to buy.
Causing pain doesn't relieve pain, it's as simple as that.
Summary of The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook: Your Self-Treatment Guide for Pain Relief, Second EditionTrigger point therapy is one of the most intriguing and fastest-growing bodywork styles in the world. Medical doctors, chiropractors, physical therapists, and massage therapists are all beginning to use this technique to relieve formerly undiagnosable muscle and joint pain?conditions that studies have shown to be the cause of nearly 25 percent of all doctor visits. The technique involves applying short, repeated massage strokes to trigger points, tiny contraction knots in muscle tissue where restricted circulation and lack of oxygen cause referred pain. Trigger points create pain throughout the body in predictable patterns characteristic to each muscle, producing discomfort ranging from mild to severe. Trigger point massage increases circulation and oxygenation in the area and often produces instant relief.
This dynamic technique has made a huge impact among health professionals and the public alike, becoming an overnight classic in the field of pain relief. The book has sold over 220,000 copies since the release of the first edition in 2001. The second edition is a complete update and includes a new chapter specifically for massage professionals, as well as a chapter on systematic muscle relaxation techniques that can reinforce the therapeutic power of trigger point work. The first edition of this workbook is regarded as a classic in its field, and was the first book to introduce trigger point therapy to the general public as a self-care tool for alleviating chronic pain caused by a variety of conditions, including arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, headache, muscle ache, and repetitive strain injuries. As the author makes clear, all such conditions are related to lack of oxygen in exhausted or injured muscle tissue. Trigger point therapy has been used for decades by doctors, pain specialists, and massage therapists to quickly stimulate the flow of oxygen and promote rapid pain reduction. This book makes the same techniques available to the general public with instructions that are easy to follow, and abetted by an extensive collection of charts and corresponding illustrations. The author?s interest in trigger point therapy began when he used it to successfully treat his frozen shoulder. Since that time, he has dedicated himself to teaching others the same techniques. That dedication is obvious throughout his writing and the care he takes to make the therapy understandable to the lay public. Also included in this new edition is updated information that should be of great interest to pain specialists and bodyworkers, as well as useful instruction in a variety of relaxation techniques. Overall, this book is an excellent self-care resource for anyone interested in pain relief.--Larry Trivieri Jr.
