Book Reviews of The Truth about Forever (Teen's Top 10 (Awards))

Book Review: Macy's Summer; The Real Truth About Forever
Summary: 3 Stars

Macy has just finished school, and with the past death of her father sill lurking after her, she is sure that she will have a very boring summer. Her boyfriend Jason is gone at `Brain Camp', and she has taken over his job at the library info desk. Then one day as Macy meets Wish catering; a catering company where anything is possible. She becomes friends with other teens who have experienced a death in the family, and even finds herself head over heals in love with one of the caterers. Wes is an artistic, good-spirited teen who Macy finds very enchanting. He sculpts original artwork, and sells in his shop. Wes and Macy carry on a huge truth or dare game throughout the story, teaching the readers more and more about themselves. Macy also has another problem. Her high-strung mother, who is pushing Macy way too far, telling her who (and who not) to hang out with. Although Macy's summer may turn out to be the hardest, she will learn what's fake, and what's meant to be, even if means losing things along the way.
I loved this story, and although in some areas it was slow, I thought that the way the Sarah Dessen explained Macy's character was amazing. She wrote in first person, a method I love; and every time Macy was hurt, or sad, she would do things like "just drive", or "just cry". I think that what would have made this book (The Truth About Forever), even better, Sarah Dessen could have related me more to the other characters; not only Macy. I felt like I knew Macy really well, but some of her friends, and Wes were more translucent. I couldn't picture them quite as well, and sometimes the things that the said or did didn't really fit who they were, like when Macy's Mom refused to go back to her beach house even when her daughters spent endless hours preparing for it. I also didn't really understand some of it. First it'll be describing one aspect of Macy's Life, and then it'll jump straight back to her job at the library. Although I enjoyed this Novel, I thought it could have been more explanatory.
Sarah Dessen has written many other books. This Lullaby, Dreamland, Keeping The Moon, Someone Like You, That Summer, and her New York Times Bestseller, Just Listen. I have read a couple of these too, and I think that The Truth About Forever is a lot like all of Sarah Dessen's other stories, maybe even a little bit repetitive. All of her stories star a teen-aged girl who is mixed up with family trouble, as well as boy-trouble. I think that these are interesting things to learn about, but next time I would remind Sarah Dessen to explore another topic, or a different genre, because all of her books so far seem to be realistic-fiction.
I didn't know what to think of reading this book, because I thought that what it came down to was that you win some, you lose some, but in the end, no one's perfect.

Summary of The Truth about Forever (Teen's Top 10 (Awards))

Macy's summer stretches before her, carefully planned and outlined. She will spend her days sitting at the library information desk. She will spend her evenings studying for the SATs. Spare time will be used to help her obsessive mother prepare for the big opening of the townhouse section of her luxury development.

But Macy's plans don't anticipate a surprising and chaotic job with Wish Catering, a motley crew of new friends, or . . . Wes. Tattooed, artistic, anything-but-expected Wes. He doesn't fit Macy's life at all&150so why does she feel so comfortable with him? So . . . happy? What is it about him that makes her let down her guard and finally talk about how much she misses her father, who died before her eyes the year before?

Sarah Dessen delivers a page-turning novel that carries readers on a roller coaster of denial, grief, comfort, and love as we watch a broken but resilient girl pick up the pieces of her life and fit them back together.

With her sixth novel, award-winning author Sarah Dessen offers up another generous helping of finely crafted storytelling about real teens dealing with real life. In The Truth About Forever, when asked how she is coping with her father's death, invariably seventeen year old Macy Queen's answer is "fine," when nothing could be further from the truth. In actuality, she is drowning in grief while maintaining a flawless façade of good grades and unblemished behavior. Though she feels lost when her boyfriend heads to "Brain Camp" for the summer, she finds herself a job with the quirky Wish Catering crew, and meets "sa-woon"-worthy Wes, whose chaotic lifestyle is in direct opposition to her own. As the two share their stories over the summer, Macy realizes she can no longer keep her feelings on ice. Though it feels like her future endedwith her dad's death, Macy's learns that forever is all about beginnings. Dessen charts Macy's navigation of grief in such an honest way it will touch every reader who meets her. All of the Dessen trademarks are here: a girl in transition, a wonderfully fleshed out cast of secondary characters, and of course, the luminous, powerful writing itself. The Truth About Forever will more than satisfy Dessen's legion of fans, and will win her countless more as well. Highly recommended. (Ages 12 and up) --Jennifer Hubert
