Book Reviews of The Twelfth Card (A Lincoln Rhyme Novel)Book Review: My first review Summary: 1 Stars
This is my first review for Amazon. I write this so that some reader can avoid the pain I suffered. The book was the worst mystery I have ever read. Wild plot twists have been mentioned by others, nonsensical plot twists are a better description. I found none of the book to be believable and must admit the the only reason I finished to the book was to see if the final half was worse than the first half. This book was factually wrong in so many ways. Here are a few; 1) The prices listed were off. 2)College professors held office hours late on Friday afternoons. 3) Someone was paid with $1000 dollar bills.
I will give away one plot twist. Someone has been stealing rare books for months. Someone is given a contract to kill a girl two weeks before the first attempt is made to kill the girl who happens to be reading the rare book. The brillant detectives assume the book thefts are to a smart way to cover up the murder. I would have found the book less offensive if the plot twist was that young aliens were playing with their parents' time machine and that the aliens had given the murder contract in order to prevent their parents' from discovering the youthful indecretion.
Book Review: Fast Paced Thriller with an Excellent Villain Summary: 5 Stars
Mr. Deaver has written a fast paced novel with great detail. He doesn't bore the reader with unnecessary fluff to take up space. The book is somewhat of a roller-coaster ride as you can't possibly figure who hire the excellent villain, Thompson Boyd.
Boyd's character is the mainstay in the book. The description on why he's as cold & callous as ice is very interesting. A new twist on a very old career, one might say.
Beginning with a crime that happened 140 years ago, the book evolves around that central theme very well.
There's very good descriptions of each character's inner beings & turmoils.
A nice little touch, though not really needed, is the author posting the text of the investigation's description boards a few times throughout the book.
Being my first Deaver book, this was my introduction to the main characters of Rhyme & Sachs. Amelia Sachs I liked. Lincoln Rhyme, to me, is just OK. As a main character in Deaver's books I found him a bit weak.
The author may have subliminally included some of his own political slants, but I didn't care, The book is good
All in all, the book is a solid thriller well worth your time.
Book Review: interesting but can be much more interesting!!! Summary: 4 Stars
This is my third book of Jeffery Deaver- I read before the Vanished Man and Praying for sleep. I think i enjoy this book but I must say that Deaver can do this book much more good.
The good part of the book is the end. Deaver prove his creativeness and make a wonderful end to this book. In other part of the book I find suspense but in small doses.
I think that Deaver could do this book much more good if he make it much more historic to the mysterious of the eighteen century. Much more deeper description of the character, especially Geneva and Thompson Boyd, can be Another improvement in this book.
to summarize, this book was very good book and I recommend of him to all the pepole that love suspense novels!!!
Book Review: The worst Deaver novel by far Summary: 1 Stars
Please believe me - even if you love Lincoln Rhyme, this novel is not worth reading. I have read 7 Jeffery Deaver novels thus far, and I have enjoyed them all, especially The Coffin Dancer and The Devil's Teardrop. But The Twelfth Card is tedious, formulaic, and just "off" - was it even written by Deaver? The "slang" dialogue used by the African Americans in the novel is downright embarassing, inaccurate, and offensive - I could barely read it without cringing. And not once did the plot pick up to the point where it was a "page-turner." It was just kind of boring.
As you read more Deaver novels, it becomes easier and easier to predict his plot twists. Do yourself a favor and skip this one!!!!!
Book Review: A Great Villian to Follow Summary: 4 Stars
This story was especially good because of it's killer, Thompson Boyd. There is a more interesting character study to this man than many of Deaver's other villainous creations, and that's all I'll write, because a reader really should look under this rock himself. As always, the mystery unfolds with red herrings and surprises. Lincoln Rhyme, Deaver's paralyzed detective is always drawing on and adding to his encyclopedic memory. Amelia Sachs, who must do the most of the active pursuit is as complex and courageous as ever. The attraction between them provides its usual tension to the more dangerous scenes. And, as always, Deaver delivers excellent suspense.
