Book Review: Moose grammar makes this story incredibly confusing

"The Uglified Ducky" puts a spin on the classic Ugly Duckling tale - here, it is a young moose that is mistaken for a duckling, and the moose blunders along with his duck 'kin' unaware of his true origins, feeling sad and alienated at not fitting in (being constantly put down by mother duck doesn't help either), until he finally discovers who he really is.
My main complaint with this story is the "moose grammar" that the author uses in telling the story. Simply put, it makes the story confusing, and my almost 5-year-old kept asking why the story had words pronounced wrong as in "bandridged" for "bandaged", "deflection" for "reflection","demember for remember", etc. I can understand that the author is attempting humor here with the creative use of words, but all it does is confuse, especially in the case of children who are beginning to learn grammar basics, and how words are used to convey meaning. For example the use of double negatives "But the Uglified Ducky cannot make no Quack sound." I think this book has a place, perhaps for very young children (babies-toddlers), who might like the silly sounds on the accompanying audio CD, and even for adults who can appreciate the silliness of the moose grammar, spelling, and usage, but as an educator, I have misgivings about this book being read to children in the process of developing their grammar, and learning the way words are used to convey meaning.
