Book Reviews of The Uncommon Reader: A Novella

Book Review: Go ahead...read this book!
Summary: 5 Stars

Go ahead...read this book. It will only take an evening or two, and, even though it's about Queen Elizabeth II, it's just plain fun. And I laughed out loud when I bumped into the last page. Fantastic (but don't dare peek or the rest will be ruined).

This is a not-so-serious book about falling in love with reading, learning what you can from it, and then getting on with what's next. If you are a reader, you'll recognize yourself somewhere in this story. If not, you just might be tempted into reconsidering. Bennett treats Her Magesty gently but still has a bit of fun at her expense. The rest of the court...well, they don't fare so well.

Book Review: Interesting - But Missing Something
Summary: 3 Stars

This is the story of the Queen of England and what would happen if she became obsessed with reading. You find her reading on her way to parliament and sneaking books into meetings. You also would find that she would have sent servants to select books for her. What I found lacking from this story was what does it all mean? Yes it is interesting to think of the Queen in this manner and to even see what she would expect from meeting authors, but what in the world would it effect? Would it change how she addresses world hunger or any other issue? You never find out and the story just ends. Great start, but poor finish.

Book Review: Quick read
Summary: 5 Stars

The uncommon reader is the elderly Queen Elizabeth II. While chasing after her corgis, the Queen stumbles upon a bookmobile that regularly stops at Windsor Castle. Other than the librarian, the bookmobile's only occupant is Norman, who works in the Windsor Castle kitchen. Under the tutelage of Norman, the Queen slowly discovers the world of books and the joy of reading. As her enjoyment of reading grows, the Queen's tolerance for state functions decreases, much to the chagrin of her staff. This quick read is recommended for those who just let the dishes pile up as they read one more chapter.

Book Review: Even HRH can love books
Summary: 4 Stars

A clever little book, as much about the joy and discovery of falling in love with reading and books as it is about the quirks of politics and hangers-on about the throne. (I suppose there's a term for all those folks, but in the relief of having my mother come through surgery with flying colors, my brain is mush.)

There were several times that I thought the Queen spot on in her observations about books. I wonder how closely the character of Elizabeth II in this book runs with the real gal. Behind closed doors she may be passionate about her books and a closet BookCrosser!

Book Review: Cute story
Summary: 3 Stars

Summary: A mobile library van visits Buckingham Palace, where the Queen stumbles upon it and feels obligated to check out a book, even though she doesn't really read books.

Review: Cute book. It reminded me of the movie The Queen. You know, because they're both about the Queen.

I don't know that this book was my exact cup of tea, but I enjoyed it. And at 120 pages, it was a super-quick read.

If you love books and the monarchy, you'll adore this little lovely.
