Book Reviews of The Uncommon Reader: A NovellaBook Review: Charming and Clever! Summary: 5 Stars
This little novella is a book that any "common" reader would appreciate. The Queen's discovery and enjoyment of reading illustrates the devotion one develops for books. Her enthusiasm is quite comical, as she finds herself neglecting or begrudgingly attending to her duties, wanting nothing more than to get lost in a book. I most certainly can relate! Laced with a wry humor, this book emphasizes the power of the written word and its transcendence of race, gender, and social class.
Book Review: A Royal Treat Summary: 4 Stars
When the Queen of England happens into a bookmobile, she feels compelled by courtesy to check out a book. But when she takes it home and actually reads it, the world of books -- in fact, the world in general -- opens up in a way that this seemingly worldly woman never expected. And in this tiny novella, Bennett opens up the Queen's interior and exterior lives and the world of reading in ways I never expected. A smart and witty treat!
Book Review: lovely novella for literature lovers Summary: 4 Stars
A lovely short book for lovers of literature. This book imagines the Queen stumbling upon a traveling library and falling in love with books and reading. The newfound passion leads to changes in the Queen's habits and her general demeanor/thoughts. I often find I want books to keep going but, somehow, this one felt satisfying even though I spent only one evening with it. Four stars easily, maybe even a little higher.
Book Review: Very amusing novella - a pleasure to read! Summary: 4 Stars
I was completely unprepared for this very amusing novella by Alan Bennett. Queen Elizabeth II discovers the mobile library while chasing after her corgis and, guided by the kitchen boy, finds herself lost in BOOKS! Every passionate reader will identify with her joy-in-reading-discoveries, and the complete lack of understanding of this joy by her family and surrounding staff. It was a pleasure to read.
Book Review: surprisingly funny Summary: 4 Stars
I started this book without knowing anything about it. It's one of these books you will not want to put down until you finish it. And when you finish it, your mouth will fall open. I found myself enjoying the company of the main character, who happens to be the Queen, and wanting to know more about her.
It's well written and made me laugh a few times. If you love books, you will enjoy this one.
