Book Reviews of The Unfair Advantage

Book Review: Should be a prerequisite for ALL race drivers!
Summary: 5 Stars

The Unfair part is all of us losing a humble, respectful, competitor, genius and master racer at only 38 years of age. This is a top shelf read and should be a prerequisite for any or all race drivers, especially at the pro-level.

The days seem long gone of intelligent racers. Mark Donohue was a 'busted knuckle' type who learned, the right or wrong ways and shared without arrogance. His humble nature and feelings with the media and fellow teammates are clearly self explained. I would love to see a third version unedited but add a part two having some of Marks closest associates such as Roger Penske and Karl Kainhofer write some indepth thoughts of Donohue, perhaps of particular good and bad events.

Arrogance is too often displayed by todays racers, both on and off the track in ALL leagues. All pro-level racing today is buying a ride, managers/owners who only look at the business and not the package spectators want. Pro racing today seems to me like a WWF event with characters to match. The so called 'racing' today is about who has the fattest wallet. I'll bet many old timers still in the game regret what has come of it all but know the show must go on. Its also made many of them very rich.

Too bad those days of racing are gone. The only way one today could sample a bit of what it was about in the 60's and 70's is to read the Unfair Advantage and take in an organized vintage race event.

Summary of The Unfair Advantage

In 1974 Mark Donohue took a year off from driving at the height of his racing career and wrote a candid and revealing book about his journey through the world of auto racing - from amateur races in his own '57 Corvette to winning the Indy 500 in Roger Penske's McLaren M16.

Now, 25 years after it's original publication, The Donohue sons and Bentley Publishers have re-released a new edition of The Unfair Advantage. The new edition contains all of the original text. Expanded content includes photographs and separately appended material that fills out the Donohue story in words and pictures and provides historical context.

The Unfair Advantage captures a uniquely American blend of intellect and scrappiness. A graduate in engineering from Brown University, Donohue integrated creativity, openness to new ideas, humor, and his persistent will to win into every part of his approach to racing.

When Donohue puts that formula into words in The Unfair Advantage the result is as much an attitude and perspective as anything else. As such, it has had wide reaching and particularly personal impact for almost 30 years in the world of motorsport participants and enthusiasts.
