Book Reviews of The Vitamin D CureBook Review: Pianist's Arthritis is Cured! Summary: 5 Stars
At the ripe old age of 44, I found that I was having problem with hand movement...Why is this is significant, you ask? I am a professional Piano Instructor! In September, I was referred to Dr. Dowd by my orthopedist. My orthopedist diagnosed arthritis, with a possibility of RA.
Later that month, Dr. Dowd saw me in The Arthritis Institute in Brighton, MI. He spent a SIGNIFICANT amount of time, reviewing my medical history, discussing my diet, and my lifestyle. After a series of testing, Dr. Dowd recommended 2000 mg of Vitamin D per day with a suppliment of Omega 3 Fatty Acids (since I DO NOT eat fish!).
Although I thought that there was NO WAY that I could successfully follow a diet of no grains and no cheese, I vowed to try to follow the diet until my 2 month follow-up appointment. One week after following the diet, I definitely needed some scientific research to boost my moral,so I bought "The Vitamin D Cure".
Within a few weeks of following the diet and taking the supplements, I had significant mobility of my hands back. I have followed his diet guidelines closely (I, however, find that I can only stomach a banana first thing in the morning)and have seen remarkable results. It's been over three months, and in addition to playing the piano again, I am ALEVE FREE (and have been for 3 months)! The unforeseen, but welcome, side effect is that I lost 10 pounds and will probably never have to worry about stomach fat again!
THANKS Dr. Dowd for your informative and life-changing book!
Book Review: NEW LIFE Summary: 5 Stars
I have been fortunate enough to have been a patient of James Dowd for 1 1/2 years. He suggested the Vitamin D Cure (diet, exercise, supplements,& blood work,) for my severe arthritic pain. It has been an amazing transformation for my physical life. When we first met, I was grosseley overweight, unable to keep my balance and had severe pain in every joint of my 60 year old body. I was clinically depressed, loosing my hair, pre-diabetic and unable to rebound after any cold or illness. I was unable to walk more than ten feet without a rest and forced to retire early. I have a new life thanks to Dr. Dowd and his solutions. I bought other books about pain and diet before "The Vitamin D Cure"was printed. None covered or explained as well how important our diets are to our physical well-being. My hair is no longer falling out. My skin is no longer sandy and gritty, but smoother. Some of my age spots have disappeared. I can walk around big box stores without riding in an Amigo cart. I can bend over and pick up some of my grandson's toys without fear of falling over. My pain is now minimal, although when storm fronts blow through I still have painful periods. The natural diet (as a hunter gatherer) helped take off some of the weight. Slowly, I'm feeling healthier every month. My blood pressure is down and I'm alive! I would highly recommend this book, and its suggestions.
Book Review: What I Didn't Know Could Have Harmed Me Summary: 5 Stars
I have to admit, before reading this book I thought I got enough vitamin D on a daily basis from my foods -- wrong! The book had me reading labels and realizing that vitamin D is actually found in very few foods, none of which I regularly consumed.
And sunshine? I certainly don't go out when the sun is the highest (too hot here), much less without sunscreen. So no vitamin D from that source.
Drug interactions? After looking at the lists of drugs that interfere with vitamin D uptake, I could only conclude that between them, the lack of sunshine and the inadequate D from foods, that I was certainly in the "deficient" category. And yes, I recognized some of the symptoms of a deficiency all too well.
I appreciated that the author cited studies, so that I could look them up myself (what can I say, I tend to be skeptical of anything touted as a "cure"). They definitely gave me food for thought. And convinced me that I should be taking a vitamin D supplement.
I did find the book fascinating, and I have recommended it to several people for reading. While I don't believe any one vitamin alone is a "cure", I can see where supplementation with D would help a great deal with many disorders.
Book Review: Poorly written Summary: 1 Stars
Enthusiastic, one-size fits all.
There is some information that I agree with, but I'm not sure whether to trust new information because the book is so sloppily written. Blood vitamin D levels are offered as numbers without units. The references listed at the end are not connected with pages or topics; you'd have to sort through them yourself to find support for the assertions made in the text. The quiz you can take to determine your risk of D-deficiency is skewed so that almost everyone will come out "at high risk". The acid-base balancing is heavily skewed toward the diet of meat and produce that he recommends, without giving any explanation of how the point values for each food were derived, or saying what exactly is "a serving" of any food, or why he thinks cheese is the ultimate bad food. I find it especially odd that bread and pasta are separated from cereals, and that they have quite different values from each other (2,6 and 8).
One useful thing is knowing that you can get the UVI for your area from various websites to help figure out how much sun to get.
This is an ok place to start- but go on, and do more research to figure out what fits for you.
Book Review: I am a believer! Summary: 5 Stars
I heard about this book when a local news station did an interview with Dr. Dowd about Vitamin D deficiency. I was intrigued and did some further research by reading reviews and searching my nutrition books. I decided to buy the book and immediately started reading it. I had been taking Vitamin D supplements but was not regular about it. I also was not taking enough I.U.'s (as I learned from the book). I have suffered with shoulders, back and neck pain for years. My doctor would just say "oh you're getting arthritus" and just "take asperin". I always noticed the pain to be much worse in the winters (when we get little sun in Michigan) ... I took asperin almost every day and lived with the pain "dulled". I have been taking 2000 I.U.'s per day for about a month now & I cannot believe how much better I feel! I noticed I was feeling less stiffness in my shoulders within less than 2 weeks of upping my Vitamin D intake! Dr. Dowd recommends 3000 I.U.'s but I thought I'd be cautious and start with 2000 I.U.'s; I cannot believe how much better I feel. I haven't taken an asperin in weeks! I highly recommend you read this book & give the "cure" a try!
