Book Reviews of The War After Armageddon

Book Review: Stinking Contest between two skunks
Summary: 4 Stars

This novel reads like the typical military novel of a possible apocolyptic future where the USA after having several cities taken out by nuclear terrorism goes all out in war against the middle east. Most of the military action takes place in what is today Israel but in the future is part of an Islamic theocracy. Unfortunately, the USA is also a theocracy.

This novel pulls no punches in describing the Fascist country that America becomes due to the Christian Right taking over the country. Interestingly, the main character, General Harris is a devout Christian. The contrast between his ethical faith and the hypocritical faith of the people who have taken over America is made clear. The leadership of both sides is almost undistinguishable in their fanaticsm, oppression of women and dissidents, and religious bigotry.

The ground level military action is the best part of the book. There is typical soldier humor, combat action and most interestingly, the depiction of how the military would operate in a low tech environment.

Book Review: Peters' TURNER DIARIES
Summary: 1 Stars

Yes, Ralph Peters clearly was influenced by THE TURNER DIARIES, except that book is far more to the point and intellectually honest.

The only word for this book is PUTRID. It strikes a moral equivalence between Christianity and Islam, for which Peters will have to answer to a higher authority. When have Christians targeted civilians while hiding behind their own civilians? When have Christians carried out suicide attacks?? Peters clearly hates his own worse than he hates our enemies.

And the scenario makes no sense whatsoever. If and when Israel is nuked, she will unleash her 200 or so nukes on every major Arab city, so their will be no Syria or Jordan. And the Israeli military don't all live in Tel Aviv - there will be plenty of Israeli firepower to stop what's left of the neighboring Arabs. Finally, Americans are more likely, in the case of nuclear attacks, to turn to secular military leaders than to the Christian Right.

This is a hate book, no less so than TURNER DIARIES.

Book Review: Bleak vision of a planet engulfed in religious war
Summary: 4 Stars

What I found particulary horrifying was the vision of a planet engulfed in a religious war between Christian extremists and Islamic extremists and just how plausible such a future is.

It is obvious Peters has no love of any form of extremism and regardless of the belief of the extremist he knows such a being is dangerous. Let those individuals into government and the result is something grotesque and so far removed from the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The story deals with the internal conflicts between the regular branches of the US military and the new and all powerful National Guard unified and renamed The Military Order of Brothers In Christ just as much as it does the war with Islam.

This books is grim and has no happy ending, though to be honest for the first time in a long time I wanted so much for this book to end on a positive note to give me some hope but alas that was not meant to be.

Book Review: A Dark Future ahead
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been a fan of Ralph Peters since picking up his Novel "Red Army" many years ago. His writing style is always on point, bringing you the insight into what is happening and developing characters that you truly feel for.The War After Armageddon is a masterpiece of Future War fiction, that may not be far from the truth about where the world is headed in the not-so-distant future. The basis of the story is Fundamentalist thinking, Muslim and Christian, and the extremes that each will go to to eradicate who they see to be the "non-believers". It is also the story of soldiers in a technologically extreme war, some who are fighting a war of eradication, and others who have heard and answered the call of duty, only to be betrayed and seen as an enemy by their own side. Mr. Peters has painted a vivid picture of what happens when fundamentalism becomes extreme, and after reading The War After Armageddon, I hope that the fiction never becomes reality. Highly recommended.

Book Review: Frightening reality-fiction. . .
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a frighteningly realistic look at what could easily be the near future of warfare for the United States military. Peters takes readers on a vivid journey through an all out war in the Middle East between radical Islamist regimes, and the US that begins with nuclear / dirty bombs exploding in several European and US cities.

In addition to exploring what "modern" warfare could look like in a world of constant EMP and electronic jamming, Peters also gives us a peek into what the US will look like if Theocrats are allowed to take over. Once the US elects a radical fundamentalist reverend to the White House, a new branch of the military is formed solely to fight this Armageddon, and take back holy sites. The conflict between religious fanaticism and the Constitution is played out on the battlefield.

Overall a great book despite a minor issue with chronology in one part.
