Book Reviews of The War After Armageddon

Book Review: Excellent and Scary---but Caliphate's better
Summary: 4 Stars

The key thing to note about this book is that the situation it describes is hopeless, a battle to the finish. I can see some of what happens here coming true---our current President's uselessness in this scenario is well described, and his refusal to do anything with the Iranians is certainly midwifing this future nightmare, but for a much better thought through version of this showdown, I would recommend Caliphate by Tom Kratman, another former Army Colonel. (And if you like that, check out his Legion series, with The Lotus Eaters coming out.)

Book Review: Very Fast Read
Summary: 5 Stars

It usually takes me a while to finish a book, even a good one. However, I finished this one in just a few days. I couldn't put it down. There were many times that I caught myself watching the news and thinking how current day events could lead to what Peters wrote about. The action was very intense and realistic. My only complaint is that it ended too soon. I think there was more that he could have done to wrap up the story but that didn't take away from the book at all.

Book Review: Entertaining at times
Summary: 3 Stars

The combat sequences are quite entertaining, but the overall story is quite far-fetched, and the ending is a definite let-down.

The idea that the "nuking" of LA & Las Vegas (I always figure it will be LA & SF that actually get taken out first), would lead to a "right wing takeover", is a notion that is basically sound - however, the idea is stretched far past the breaking point, and by the end of the book, it reaches complete absurdity.

Book Review: NOT AS GOOD AS I EXPECTED
Summary: 1 Stars

Perhaps my expectations were too high. Perhaps I'm not knowledgeable enough about warfare. I was very disappointed in this book. I don't often give up on a book, but I did give up on this one about half way through. Passed it to my dad who has lots more time than I have and he slogged through it but he agreed that it was not an easy read. It just took too much work to keep up with the characters and situation.

Book Review: Not up to Ralph Peters standards!
Summary: 1 Stars

This is a dark novel, it starts out with a retro look and ends in an uncharacteristic and depressing fashion. There are no heroes, no winners, everyone and everything loses. The tactics are minimized and although a futuristic look is provided for electronic warfare it offers no countersolution. I don't consider this novel to be up to the standard Ralph Peters is known for.
