Book Reviews of The Wheel of Time (Boxed Set #2)Book Review: WHAT A SHAME Summary: 2 StarsOkay- I am too invested to stop. Incredible world imagined and described by the author in such a way that it becomes hard to believe (despite the incredible fantasy and magic)that it actually does NOT exist.
However what a series (equal to War and Peace or LOTR) it would have been if the author had stumbled across the concept of plot unity. Is there a plot??? I certainly cannot find one. If not for the incredibly over the top purple prose (God help me if I read about another "dark furrowed frown" , or "eyes like limpid pools" I will cry) I would say that this was a novel by a deconstructionist using stream of consciousness technique.
During book 9 and 10 the author keeps dropping dozens and dozens (no exaggeration) of new characters- going through lengthy descriptions of their appearance and personalities- and then off they go to never appear again (perhaps- but my guess is that Tor is NEVER going to end this series so maybe they will re-appear).
Okay- I guess I have been reading to much Jordan because I wander from my main point. If this guy had taken a simple writing course he would have learned:
1. Unity of Plot
2. Keeping the number of "main" characters managable (I would settle for 50 at this point)
3.Cut down the crazy over the "top silver beaded braided petty coat up to one side" descriptions. Or at least do such descriptions once. Really, how many over the top descriptions do we need of Fael's hawk like face and dark eyes? I. "Please- get ON WITH THE STORY " I keep thinking.
Book 10 served what purpose? My guess is that Tor was on him to write a book- so he did. What was the plot?- I could not guess...because there is not one...25 new characters introduced...but no action on the main ones. So the only reason for this book has to be contractual.
My theory- Jordan was paid by the word. And if you are paid by the word then why settle for one word when 10 will do?
A potential GREAT SAGA ruined by the violatiion of basic authorship. A real shame that this genius failed to realize his dream of writing an opus magnus through lack of basic organization and writing skills. What a waste!
Summary of The Wheel of Time (Boxed Set #2)The Shadow Rising/The Fires of Heaven/Lord of Chaosf Chaos. This is the second box set in Robert Jordan's epic bestselling series, the Wheel of Time. The first set included The Eye of the World, The Great Hunt, and The Dragon Reborn. The follow-up includes the next three books of the series. The Shadow Rising, The Fires of Heaven, and Lord of Chaos continue the great saga of Rand, the Dragon Reborn in a world broken in two by unimaginably powerful forces.
