Book Reviews of The Whole TruthBook Review: Predictable and tedious Summary: 2 Stars
I gave it two stars, because I consider one star as a "don't touch it" book; this book, however, with all its shortcomings has the Baldacci charcteristic of "I can't put it down -- got to keep reading" (even though the plot and outcome are quite predictable).
The book is loaded with WAY too many cliche's throughout, boring world politics, with superlatives and high-tech references that seem to have been force-fed into the text. The author often tries to hold the stick on both ends: while ridiculing Holywood for being unrealistic and convenient, he himself comes up with impossibly-lucky scenarios and saves.
Too often I felt that the book was written in a style that is not unlike one guy telling a story to his friend while sitting at the bar.
Book Review: Eye Opening Thriller 4 1/2 Stars Summary: 4 Stars
While the head of the world's largest defense contractor and his minions secretly conspire to gain even more riches by instigating a war, a multi-national intelligence agent reluctantly travels to keep the world safe, and an ambitious journalist receives a mysterious offer to interview the sole survivor of a recent massacre. BT.
"Why waste time discovering the truth when you can so easily create it?"
This is the main idea behind Perception Management (PM), an interesting and eye opening theme behind Baldacci's latest thriller.
With a heroic good-guy and some ultra-powerful villains, this latest novel will please most of David Baldacci's fans. I found it both intriguing and entertaining and enjoyed the heck out of it.
Highly recommended.
Book Review: Woefully disappointing Summary: 1 Stars
Had this been my 1st Baldacci read, I'm afraid my literary curiosity would have ended here. I have enjoyed Baldacci's previous work, some more than others. The charactors in this novel were about as "empty" as I've ever seen on paper. Shaw inspired no sympathy over his loss, other than to bemoan it at each and every turn. "Beat it to death", in my view.
The plot itself could have been a very interesting concept, but Baldacci failed to develop it in any creative or interesting manner. I had the impression that the dialogue was developed by a Jr high school student.
On a scale of 1 to 10, I gave it a 3. Most of his previous works rated much higher. Too bad. Very disappointed.
Book Review: Do Not Waste Your Money! Summary: 1 Stars
For one thing, I'm a reader, not a publishing house shill, so if you would like to read what an actual fan of the genre thought, here it is: the characters and dialogue are cliches. The plot is simple minded. I would have put the book down but 1) I didn't have another one on hand to start up; 2) it was like a literary car wreck, I just couldn't pull my eyes away; 3) it actually got funny after awhile (probably not the author's intention). If I hadn't seen the author's name on the book, I would have assumed it was a failed romance novelist taking a stab at breaking into a different genre. I have liked Baldacci's previous efforts. In the future, I'll read a sample before I plunk down the cash.
Book Review: Surprised at rating Summary: 1 Stars
While I generally enjoy this author, this book was his worst offering to date. I found the story itself to be fairly boring, while the main characters made predictable decisions and the ending was blah. I also found Shaw to be very similar to Lee Child's Jack Reacher. I almost stopped halfway, but plodded through to the end due to some loyalty to Mr. Baldacci. (He wrote one of my all time favorite books, Absolute Power. Read it.....you won't be disappointed with that one.) I was really surprised at the 4 star rating here at Amazon. 99% of the time, the ratings here are dead on, but I must be missing something with this novel. The whole truth here is - don't bother.
