Book Reviews of The Whole Truth

Book Review: Good Fast Read
Summary: 5 Stars

I am quickly becoming a David Baldacci fan. This book was excellent. Its cliche to say, but I had a tough time putting it down.

The book has the classic tough guy hero with a lady in tow, the impossible situation that they must figure out how to get through. But Baldacci's writes in a way that doesn't drown you in minute details but gives you enough to picture the setting and characters. The book provides suspense without setting up obvious twists. The book contains no lulls and puts moments in the perfect places.

I'm back on Amazon looking for more Baldacci books involving the main character, so yes, I liked this book a lot.

Book Review: Baldacci writes another winner
Summary: 4 Stars

This book may take place largely outside the U.S., but like a Starbucks in London, it's still American. In The Whole Truth nearly all the major players are American, and the ones who aren't have no power. A U.S. defense contractor hires an American ''perception management'' firm to turn the world against Russia and create another Cold War (apparently Russia has no say in the matter). Meanwhile, an American journalist gets wind of the scheme. Fortunately, the plot travels with the same speed as its globe-trotting cast, but the action feels familiar and ends where you knew it would: back home. A great action book that reminds me of a James Bond story.

Book Review: Where is David Baldacci?
Summary: 1 Stars

I could not finish this book and I like David Baldacci's novels. After the umpteenth time that Shaw cries over or loses control of himself over the death of his Anna, I shut the book and chucked it. Unbelievable characters written over the top like something on Lifetime TV and then overacted. Was this going to be TV script or movie?
I did not care about any of the characters despite Baldacci continuously telling me about their inner thoughts and motivations. I got it already, get on with the action!

The only way this could have made the NYT bestseller list is that everyone thought it would be like his previous novels.

Book Review: very disappointing
Summary: 2 Stars

Having read all of this author's earlier books, I was very disappointed with this novel. Although the premise of the story has great merit, the shallow characters with predictable action and cliche dialogue, make this a very weary read. As suggested by several other reviewers, one definitely gets the impression that there was a deadline and the adaptation of a standard character and plot development that seems to be increasingly common amongst what initially was a good pool of writers, i.e. Jack Higgins, James Patterson, Daniel Silva - just to name a few. I will probably hold off on reading future books by this author.

Book Review: Keeps up the tradition
Summary: 5 Stars

I have read all of Balducci's books. Although they generally don't break much new ground, they always seem to find a new angle for a thriller. This one is the same. If I'm looking for a literary masterpiece, this isn't it. However, what I like about this and other Baldacci books is that they are easy to read without being simplistic, the main characters for the most part are likable, and he doesn't throw in pages and pages of unnecessary detail just to make the book longer. I read complex, detailed material for my regular job--when I read a novel I want easy-to-read. Once again, Baldacci has achieved this.
