The Winter Lodge
Jenny Majesky had been was raised in the small upstate NY town of Avalon by her grandparents since age four. She often dreamed of living in the city when she got older, but after her grandfather died and her grandmother had a stroke, and she knew she wouldn't leave. She had to help her Gran and she take over running the family bakery.
Jenny spent most of her childhood at the bakery and during the summer accompanied her grandfather on deliveries to the local camp. It was at the camp that she met Rourke McKnight and fell for him after he fought off two bullies harassing her. The son of a New York politician, Rourke was sent to camp with Joey Santini, the chauffeur's son. Rourke fell for Jenny too, but when Joey set his sights on her, Rourke gave her up for his friend, even if she set his heart racing. As time passed, Joey fell more in love with her and before leaving for the service, he proposed. Thinking Rourke would never want her, and knowing Joey's feelings were true, she realized she could have a good life with him.
When Joey was reported killed in action, Rourke shared Jenny's grief and the two ended up in bed. But, Joey wasn't dead, and their guilt made Rourke and Jenny avoid each other. The day Joey was released, he rushed home to Jenny only to get killed in a horrific car accident.
The years passed, Rourke became Avalon's police chief, and he and Jenny remained distant from each other. Then one early morning while Jenny was at the bakery, Rourke showed up to take her to her house which had been totally destroyed by fire. A short month after her grandmother had passed, Jenny wondered what else she would lose. Rourke insisted she live with him until she settled things, and Jenny's old feelings returned, even though Rourke's ambivalence remained. When her long-lost father shows up to offer her step-sister's apartment in the city, Jenny realizes it's time to go, but once there, she's homesick. She returns to Avalon to unexpected happenings and a change in Rourke, which adds twists and turns to the plot.
Ms. Wiggs's characters share real-life challenges, joys and sorrows along with several subplots, making this a riveting read.

The Winter Lodge, a remote cabin owned by her half sister on the shores of Willow Lake, becomes a safe refuge for Jenny, where she and local police chief Rourke McKnight try to sort out the mysteries revealed by the fire.But when a blizzard traps them together, Jenny, accustomed to the safe predictability of running the family bakery, suddenly doesn't feel so secure. For even as Rourke shelters her from the storm outside, she knows her heart is at risk. Now, following her dreams might mean walking away from her one chance at love.
