Book Review: Excellent Overview of Catholicism
Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent overview of the Catholic faith. It gives the reader general knowledge of almost all aspects of Catholicism. Of course, being only 190 pages, it only talks about each subject very briefly, so should only be regarded as an introduction to the subject. I should probably also note that it's not an introduction to the general field of theology, as the title would suggest; it's only about Catholicism.
This book answered many questions I had about why the Church believes what it does, or why we do certain things at mass. It often did this by presenting Bible verses as evidence, which really helped to back up the claims that Sheed made because otherwise some of them would seem quite absurd.
I read this book with a friend and after each chapter we discussed what we had read. I highly recommend reading this book this way because many of the subjects are based on faith and scripture, rather than science and reasoning (as is often the case in apologetics books), so there is much that can be discussed and debated.
The target audience for this book is firm believers of the Catholic faith. Anyone who is still unsure of what religion they are, or even what type of Christianity they believe in, should NOT read this book. This is because the book presents some concepts that would seem completely absurd to a non-Catholic (or even to some Catholics), and it presents many concepts that need to be taken "by faith", something that doesn't really work with a non-religious reader. Also, it presumes some prior knowledge of Catholicism, such as from an upbringing in the Church or by reading a few apologetics books.
I would highly recommend this book to all Catholics. It will give you a new perspective on your faith and give it more meaning. It will also help you defend your beliefs.
