Book Reviews of There Is An Urgency

Book Review: 4 1/4 Stars from "Red Adept Reviews"
Summary: 4 Stars

Overall: 4 1/4 Stars

Plot/Storyline: 4 1/2 Stars

The book alternates chapters between the `present day' Gregrhi Love, who works as a teacher in an alternative school while moonlighting at a Juvenile Detention Center, and the young child version of Gregrhi Love. I really enjoyed this aspect of the book because it gave insight into how Gregrhi is using his abusive childhood to help others in similar situations. The "adult" sections also gave some much needed emotional relief after reading the "child" sections.

A warning to all: The abuse described in this book is horrific. It involves both physical and sexual abuse. Mr. Love handled the descriptions of this abuse as respectfully as possible, but there were also no punches pulled.

I did have some trouble keeping up with the timelines. The way it was written, it seemed like the portions from his childhood all took place within a matter of days, but then small hints would let me know that more time had passed. This could have been handled far better to give more perspective.

Character Development: 3 3/4 Stars

I really felt like I had missed out on something major between the "child" and th "adult". I learned of horrific younger years, including a glimpse of one bad foster home, but nothing of teen and young adult. From the "adult" section, I knew that Mr. Love made it out and overcame. What I didn't find out was how.

The rest of the characters were very well developed. The children who were students of Mr. Love in his "adult" section were interesting and engaging.

Writing Style: 4 1/4 Stars

Most of the book had a nice, easy flow to it. The `child sections' were actually the better written ones, with realistic dialogue and vivid descriptions. The `adult section' left something to be desired, especially when it came to dialogue. There were way too many "sirs" sprinkled into Mr. Love's words, as almost every bit of dialogue started with "Sir" no matter who he was addressing. I'm not going to say that he doesn't speak that way. I also get why he would speak that way. It just made for annoying reading.

Editing: 4 Stars

There were quite a few editing issues, mainly involving punctuation.

Summary of There Is An Urgency

Born into a world of horror, madness and chaos in 1973 to Debbie, a 23-year-old drug addicted prostitute and Howard, a 24-year-old addict and convict, Gregrhi Love grew up quickly with the Department of Children's Services becoming an active part of his life in 1974. With Howard in prison, the only father he knew as a child was Bobby, his mother?s pimp, drug dealer, and lover. In 1980, he was placed in his first foster home. While foster care was often horrifying, nothing compared to the daily near-death experiences he survived living in Father Panik Village with Bobby and Debbie. On May 23, 1980 his coerced testimony sent Debbie to prison.
Now a grown man, Mr. Love uses his childhood traumas to change lives. Working as a teacher allows him to use the experiences of his life to help children who live in a similar world. His experiences give him a perspective most people do not have and knowledge that cannot be obtained from any textbook. "There Is An Urgency" explores these experiences in an effort to make others aware that people like him walk among us every day.
"There Is An Urgency" is inimitable in that it juxtaposes Mr. Love?s experiences as an adult, working with children in school and juvenile detention settings, with personal accounts of physical and sexual abuse from his childhood. "There Is An Urgency" to share this story of hard won hope and resilience after years of terrifying abuse by a real life monster.
