Book Review: Ridiculously Outdated Drivel

Some concessions must be made for any book written so long ago but this book is pseudo-science at its worst.
For the first 2 chapters, the author contends that holding a burning desire to succeed (or to overcome a problem) is the most important element to success. His most developed example of this is his son Blair, who was born lacking ears or the anatomy which facilitates hearing. Determined that his son could overcome this defect, the author explains how he forbid his son from learning sign language (a particularly cruel act) and forced him to attend standard schools and associate with standard individuals and would not allow his son to live the menial life of a deaf mute. While the son was attending college he is given an experimental listening device which restores his hearing and the son later devotes his life in the service of other deaf people. The author states that the boy's "burning desire" overcame the limitations imposed by mother nature and because the boy believed that he would hear some day; he somehow played a role in the restoration of his hearing. The example is pretty thin by any measure considering that the boy's hearing was not actually restored by any "desire" to be normal but rather by an invention, which neither the author nor the boy had any hand in engineering. The son's hearing was restored due to scientific achievement, not by his desire to overcome his limitations. Likewise, an individual cannot "conquer" mother nature by merely willing their cancer to remiss or willing their blood pressure to reduce.
We live in a world of physics and laws which govern our existence and while we all wish that our being bears some significance to nature (or it's power) it's just plain wishful thinking to suggest that our "desire to overcome" has any real measurable impact on the physical world around us.
I find particular offense in the idea that success and riches derive from wealth and affluence. The author suggests a number of times that the reader should abandon his "escape route" and leave no other alternative but success. He should strive to desire wealth so strongly that it consumes his being and motivates every action in his life. I couldn't imagine a more meaningless, insignificant endeavor for one to undertake. Happiness is derived from the soul based on our relationships with others and what we leave behind that may benefit all society, not our individual shallow desires or our material excesses.
