Book Review: GASP!!! Yes, forget the cover and title!
Summary: 5 Stars
Yes, the characters are flawed and stay flawed in the end. To me that is refreshing and human. The heroine is naive to a fault and too forgiving, but she's smart never the less. The hero is dark and creepy, until we find out why. He isn't going to change and she is always going to be under his spell and naive. Once you get over that, the story is fantastic. I can understand why some people did give this 1 star, because neither character ever redeems themselves and they stay flawed throughout the book. They are human and I don't see a need for them to get over their pasts and family issues. Most of us never do. The other flaw with this book, is that the author leads you to confusion over what she really is saying at times. You have to read between the lines too much. So much so, you are left confused.
I thought myself jaded by all the romance novels I've read. They have become such a total bore and predicable to read. I liked The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by another author and thought I would not find another original story out there like that one... wrong!!! This story stunned me and it was the most delicious romance novel I've read, as far as the intimate scenes... and I've read about 100 of them. This one is as good as some of my favorites, like Gentle Rogue, Angel and Lord Ian Mackenzie. This author is a bright new star out there. Yes, forget the cover, as this story is mystery, murder and intrigue at it's best. It was like being on a roller coaster ride. A note... the heroine doesn't even look like the woman on the cover, which is strange, since the woman on the cover is blond and beautiful and the heroine is not. The hero being a knock out, comes to realize what's inside a woman and what she is made of is important. He knows that all he is loved for is his beauty and it will be a plain girl that touches him deeply.
I was stunned speechless at the first love scene and that is not easy to do. I could not put this book down at all. I couldn't wait to finish it this morning. Spoiler Alert!!! It does seem like a story that would more likely to have happened in the 20th century, not the 19th. Beside Lord Ian, this is the second book I've read, where the hero has a dark past and a hurtful one. It takes into account that men can be hurt and humiliated in their youth and that it is not just a problem for women. I like this, because I do know men who were hurt in their youth by older women preying on them and this story isn't so far fetched at all. It brings out something men don't talk about and something that happens more often then men will admit to. Most men do brush teenage abuse by older women aside and are taught that it's a boys dream come true. Not so.
I give this 5 stars for originality and the for the love scenes. I was getting so sick of the same old same old junk from older authors. The new young authors have a lot more imagination when it comes to love scenes and are much bolder and more descriptive than older authors. I hope this author makes it to the book stores, because I could not find this book anywhere, other than on Amazon. The murder mystery is fantastic, even if I guessed who it was in the middle of the book. It stunned and shocked me anyway. The twist and turns are like being on a roller coaster ride and this is one ride you want to read.
