"Tim and Tom: An American Comedy in Black and White" is a must-read. I'm not the only one who says so. David Letterman says, "I have known Tim Reid and Tom Dreesen as comedians and friends since 1975, but I never knew Tim and Tom, the comedy team. This book is four compelling stories in one compilation: One story about Tim Reid, sad, fascinating and uplifting. One story about Tom Dreesen, a man consumed by a goal and a great witness to a bygone era of show business that one can't help but long for. A third story about seeking recognition in the world of entertainment. And finally, a story about race and culture in a country that should have been farther down the road to tolerance, understanding, and human kindness than it was in the 1970s. "Tim and Tom" is a great story, the best kind of story, well told, about two men struggling to prove themselves."

The book is brilliantly sectioned in four, giving you a real in-depth view into the lives of these two great comedians and entertainers but also the nation. Tim Reid feels that it's very timely and Tom Dreesen feels it's about time. Reid says, "It was Tom's idea, I had avoided it for years. I believed that the public didn't care at the time we were going through these trials and didn't think it would be interesting now to talk about. But after over a year of working with Tom on it, I am glad we did it. It was after seeing his passion for over 20 years trying to get me to write this, that finally it was time and I am glad I did it now. It was very emotionally draining but fulfilling." Reid may have felt that the country wouldn't be interested in his story at this time, but when you see the friction going on in the nation today with the presidential election year in full swing, and a candidate that is half African American running for president and many who feel the nation is ready and others who have issues and Tim feels many Americans, "have allowed themselves to forget that this man is also half Caucasian, but here we are again in America making race an issue. If we don't solve this issue this time around. We're destined to continue to repeat the same mistakes of the past. I just hope the nation makes the right choice and finally is able to put race behind us. I think the older you get, the more you realize life is a series of circles, you find yourself coming back to the same point. If you don't learn from your lessons, you are doomed to repeat them. I began to define the path of the circles in my life, a repetitive attitude or decision led me into some of the experiences I would constantly find myself." Reid adds, "Race always comes back to the forefront of our national conscious, primitive as it seems, we don't allow ourselves to accept change. It makes us angry. But I had put a lot of this out of my mind after working with Tom and dealing with what we had to deal with on stage and in the industry and while touring the country."

Dreesen concurs about some things. "The reason I always knew it was a good book, even when we were doing our comedy act together, was mainly because we were America's first black/white comedy team. Tim and I were trailblazers at the time, but now after 30 years, do you realize that we were also the last? About 35 years ago we started and when we were living it, I knew the discourse we had on stage was beneficial to the nation and to our audience. The nation was in a turmoil, the Vietnam war was raging and blacks were burning cities in certain parts of the country. The Civil Rights Act was only a few years before. Things were really hot then. Tim and I were on stage and you could feel the audience's tension when they would see us come in together. Wondering what would happen." Dressen, however, did enjoy working on stage with his partner. "I would have never given up doing our comedy, but the pressure was really hard on Tim." Reid became very tired of the pressures of race and being mavericks on stage as almost the national experiment that they were. Dreesen also adds, "Everything I am today, I owe to Tim, he's my brother from another mother. We remain close today." Their families are very close to this day.

The chemistry, love and trust that these two men feel for each other is very obvious in this book. What I loved about the book was that it was not out on a mission or trying to convince anyone of what they should do with their lives or how they should or shouldn't look at racial issues in America. It simply told an honest and unbiased version of two men working together despite having different color skin. You get the feeling that the nation would be in a much better place with open-minded and honest men like Tim Reid and Tom Dreesen running things. Dreesen admired another group of mavericks. He became very close to Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. of Sammy, Dreesen concluded, "Sammy Davis, Jr. was the Jackie Robinson of entertainment. He tore the barriers down. Sammy Davis, Jr. had five times more talent than anyone in the business."

The book is available across the nation and on Amazon. It's published by the University of Chicago Press. Reid and Dreesen will be together again this week on David Letterman's show on Tuesday night.

This book is not only entertaining, honest and enlightening, but a must-read for young people who do not know what these men endured just 35 years ago on stage across America.

Summary of Tim and Tom: An American Comedy in Black and White

As the heady promise of the 1960s sagged under the weight of widespread violence, rioting, and racial unrest, two young men--one black and one white--took to stages across the nation to help Americans confront their racial divide: by laughing at it.

Tim and Tom tells the story of that pioneering duo, the first interracial comedy team in the history of show business--and the last. Tim Reid and Tom Dreesen polished their act in the nightclubs of Chicago, then took it on the road, not only in the North, but in the still-simmering South as well, developing routines that even today remain surprisingly frank--and remarkably funny--about race. Most nights, the shock of seeing an integrated comedy team quickly dissipated in uproarious laughter, but on some occasions the audience?s confusion and discomfort led to racist heckling, threats, and even violence. Though Tim and Tom perpetually seemed on the verge of making it big throughout their five years together, they grudgingly came to realize that they were ahead of their time: America was not yet ready to laugh at its own failed promise.

Eventually, the grind of the road took its toll, as bitter arguments led to an acrimonious breakup. But the underlying bond of friendship Reid and Dreesen had forged with each groundbreaking joke has endured for decades, while their solo careers delivered the success that had eluded them as a team. By turns revealing, shocking, and riotously funny, Tim and Tom unearths a largely forgotten chapter in the history of comedy.
