Book Reviews of Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff

Book Review: Can't recommend this book enough!
Summary: 5 Stars

I second Stilt's review, the only difference being that I was lucky enough not to have any money or insurance so I couldn't afford to get surgery and rehab. Instead I bought Johnson's book and 6 months or so later, my shoulder was 98% healed!!
I can say, without exaggeration, that Johnson gave me my life back! As anyone with a serious rotator cuff injury knows, it is more than a just a shoulder problem. Your whole life starts to go downhill. You can't sleep, takes an hour to get dressed or undressed, have a hard time showering, shaving, or brushing your teeth, hell, I used to have to pick up my arm to shake someone's hand!

Book Review: Treat your own rotator cuff
Summary: 5 Stars

This book, written by a Physical Therapist, explains and shows the muscles involved in the rotator cuff more clearly than any other anatomy book I've picked up on the subject. He explains what muscles you are strengthening for each exercise. Stretching, very much like yoga stretching, is also included. If I could talk to the author, I would ask him to look up Supported Headstand as a very effective treatment for RCS, too. This is thoroughly explained in volume 16 of the International Journal of Yoga Therapy in a research article entitled Headstand for Rotator Cuff Tear: Shirshasana or Surgery.

Book Review: Peace of mind, but stuff I already knew
Summary: 4 Stars

Everything in the book I had read somewhere else, and all I was looking for is what are the exercises that are most likely to help. I had trouble wanting to spend $20 on it with the fear I would get it and there wouldn't be any information not available through searching Google. After I read the book, I wasn't disappointed with spending the $20 because it removed any doubt that I could work towards reducing the pain in my shoulder. If you are looking for a definitive source on what to do, when to do it, and how to do it, this is your book and it removes the guess work out of what you are doing.

Book Review: Straight Forward Advice
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this book in hopes it would help my ailing shoulder. Initially, the exercises in the book did not help. I went to a shoulder specialist and after an MRI discovered I had 2 bone spurs that needed surgery. In my case, no amount of exercise was going to help. But, I should also point out that after my surgery, I have avoided needing to go to physical therapy because I have this book and can do the exercises at home.

So, no matter what your shoulder problem, the book is worth a shot. It may help, and if it does not help at first, you can use it after surgery.

Book Review: Disappointed, but glad I read it
Summary: 4 Stars

I actually agree with the critical reviews. In terms of doing stretches and exercises, there really isn't much groundbreaking here. You can easily find these exercises on the internet if you do some search. Where the book justifies the purchase (at least for me) are the sections about general knowledge about the rotator cuff. I'm now aware which part of the rotator cuff I'm having trouble with and which exercise to do to treat certain part of the muscles. This will ultimately get you more confident on exercising. And yes, these exercises do work.
