Book Reviews of TributeBook Review: Will the real Nora please stand up! Summary: 1 Stars
Whatever happened to Nora Roberts? The lady who writes the JD Robb stories and other sizzling romances and mysteries? I certainly couldn't find any trace of her in "Tribute." I think Nora was trying to channel Eve Dallas into Cilla, what with her sarcasm and attempts at dry humor, but it didn't work. She was boooooring. And her neighbor was almost like a caricature: handsome, charming, sexy, well-off, sensitive, and understanding. He seemed as fake as Cilla. And the mystery?!? Who cares? This book seemed like something Nora had to write to meet a quota of books and she wasn't much interested in it. I couldn't even finish the book I found it so boring. Why were these people in love? Because the book had to have a romance And why was Cilla's ex-husband in the book? He had no real impact on the story. And I couldn't stand how mushy Cilla was when Steve got hurt. If she loved him so much and was so hysterical when he was hurt, why didn't she stay with him?
Sorry Nora, but the next time, I think I'll get your latest from the library so I won't be stuck with an expensive, boring, hardback. Nora, Nora, please come back.
Book Review: "Me and Shrek. We're like onions." Summary: 5 Stars
I loved TRIBUTE so much that I stayed up late two nights in a row to finish it. Then I was depressed that I had finished it so quickly!
This latest offering from Nora Roberts really does have everything I've come to love in her writing: mystery, romance, great character development, and a truly interesting storyline.
With the added fun additions of flipping houses, hosts of HGTV shows, graphic novelists, actresses and screen legends, and high school English teachers, all branches of career and life are covered.
This really is a book for your keeper shelf. You'll fall in love with Cilla and Ford, you'll agonize over the dual mystery of Janet Hardy's death and the current terror that the main character is facing, and you'll laugh-out-loud at the wonderful chemistry and dialogue between the hero and heroine. I would really like to read more about this couple in the futre -- they're just really down-to-earth people that you come to respect and admire by the end of TRIBUTE.
Maybe we can get an update on their lives when Ms. Roberts writes Steve and Shanna's story? (Hint, hint!)
Book Review: June Nolen author of In Reverse Time Summary: 3 Stars
I bought Tribute in large print which I always look for. Nora Roberts is an outstanding author. There is no question about that.
When Cilla, a child star, returns to her grandmother's home in Virginia, she has left Hollywood and her mother behind to lead a quieter life. She has learned to FLIP houses and is a whiz with tools. She meets Ford, who lives across the street with his dog, a real character, and they become involved. Her grandmother commited suicide in the house. In the attic she finds old letters that point to the fact that her grandmother was pregnant at the time of her death and that the father, possibly someone from the community, didn't want the baby.
I love a mystery and the found letters were a mystery to solve. I personally got lost in all the different characters and how they were related to each other. I stayed confused and had to re-read a lot of the book, back-tracking to find out who was who. I don't believe this is a book I will keep or re-read but I did like the main characters very much.
Not one of Nora Roberts best but enjoyable all the same.
Book Review: Yes! Another great one from Roberts Summary: 5 Stars
Cilla, child actress turned house flipper, and Ford, a graphic artist, at first glance make an odd pairing for a romantic couple. However, Nora Roberts has scored a success with this hardcover in making this unlikely pairing work on several levels. The mystery/romance also works as Cilla tries to untangle the mystery of her famous actress/grandmother's death as well as threats to her own life.
If you are a fan of Roberts you will also enjoy some glimpses into her hobby of gardening and the research she did on home restoration!
The book is crisp and tightly written, although with judicious editing, twenty to forty pages probably could have been trimmed. I did not care for Angel Falls (too far fetched), Birthright (felt the coincidences were too over the top) or my least favorite of all her books--Northern Lights. I waivered on whether to buy Tribute, but the 40 percent off combined with a sticker that said "Signed Copy" swayed me to purchase it. Glad I did.
The book is solid Roberts at her best.
Book Review: Trite, uninspired, bland, dull, and predictable! Summary: 1 Stars
I normally enjoy Nora Robert's books and was looking forward to reading this one. Unfortunately, this was very disappointing. First, the lead female character flips houses and I think 50% of the book was devoted to a discussion on how she is rehabing the house. In GREAT detail. It was almost to the level of a how-to book. Second, the two lead characters were both formulaic, boring, and perfect. The female was predictably "finding herself" while the male lead was the perfect, understanding, funny, and patient mate. The dialogue was boring, rehearsed, trite, and WAY too witty. Absolutely unrealistic. I found myself skipping through pages near the end, which is normally the best part of the book. The climax was predictable and formulaic. I was very disappointed and unfortunately felt like I wasted my time reading this book. I never feel this way reading books. I hope she changes her style, focusing on quality instead of quantity. I look forward to better books by her in the future.
