Book Reviews of TributeBook Review: Trite, uninspired, bland, dull, and predictable! Summary: 1 Stars
I normally enjoy Nora Robert's books and was looking forward to reading this one. Unfortunately, this was very disappointing. First, the lead female character flips houses and I think 50% of the book was devoted to a discussion on how she is rehabing the house. In GREAT detail. It was almost to the level of a how-to book. Second, the two lead characters were both formulaic, boring, and perfect. The female was predictably "finding herself" while the male lead was the perfect, understanding, funny, and patient mate. The dialogue was boring, rehearsed, trite, and WAY too witty. Absolutely unrealistic. I found myself skipping through pages near the end, which is normally the best part of the book. The climax was predictable and formulaic. I was very disappointed and unfortunately felt like I wasted my time reading this book. I never feel this way reading books. I hope she changes her style, focusing on quality instead of quantity. I look forward to better books by her in the future.
Book Review: Nora Roberts creates another strong heroine! Summary: 4 Stars
As all of Ms. Roberts' books, this one has lots of romance, very real and likeable characters, and a surprising twist thrown in for good measure. In this case, a child actor (Cilla), now grown and searching for more from life, goes to fix up a home once owned by her famous, movie-star grandmother. Cilla has to rehab the house, deal with her feelings over the supposed suicide of her grandmother thirty years earlier in that very house, and figure out what her attraction is for her closest neighbor, graphic artist Ford. Only someone doesn't want Cilla there digging into thirty years of history, and someone may even kill to keep her from finding out what really happened to her grandmother. Ms. Roberts creates another strong heroine in Cilla McGowan, and another sexy hero in Ford Sawyer. When you add in the spectacular love scenes, the intriguing paranormal twist, and the murder mystery to boot, Ms. Roberts' fans will be once again paying "tribute" to a remarkable author.
Book Review: Secret Identities Summary: 4 Stars
This book did grab me fairly early on and held my attention more and more as I read. There are some flashback scenes between the main character, Cilla, and her dead grandmother, Janet, that I mostly found annoying. Other than that, a decent mystery. Without giving away plot devices, I found enough clues in the story to lead me to guess the villian, or at least strongly suspect the person's identity, before the big reveal. This book includes some legitimate detail, such as the houseflipping jargon. At the same time, Cilla's boyfriend, Ford, writes and draws graphic novels, and at times his work is lewd and rough. So I found it amusing to read such differences in language and style, all within the same story.
The ending is mostly satisfying, though an epilogue would have been appreciated. Ends are tied up but in a loose way and there is room for a sequel, or another book using some of the characters, should she return to the same place for another book.
Book Review: Fantastic! Summary: 5 Stars
I always look forward to another Nora Roberts. Tribute was a story that keeps Nora at the top of her game!
The hero was just super. He was not your typical gung-ho macho hero, but completely and totally lovable. His quirky humor, his absence of mechanical abilities, his dog, his slight (very slight) nerdiness all combined to make him an unique hero. I fell in love with him immediately.
The heroine was so strong and determined to succeed despite her feelings of past failures. It was fascinating to read of her efforts to both restore and make her grandmother's house her own. My mind boogled at the expense she incurred to remodel this house.
Nora's secondary characters were the best! They seemed so solid with each other. Of course, now I hope that there will be a sequel so that a couple of the secondary characters can have their own story.
One can only hope!!
Book Review: Roberts Never Disappoints Summary: 4 Stars
Nora Roberts' books never disappoint. Tribute is a very engaging story and, as always, the end always leaves me wanting more.
I had some trouble with the beginning of the book and had just started to worry that I wouldn't be able to "get into" the story and then BAM! I was fully engaged.
I won't go into a lot of detail about the plot as so many others have handled that so well already, but I will say that all of her characters are believable and, as always, she has come up with a hero that is both likeable and real.
I do wish there had been a little more interaction between the hero and heroine and a little less detail about remodeling. Also, here's to hoping that one of the "extras" ends up with a book of his own. (Go Steve!)
Overall this was a good book and one that will stay on my keeper shelf.
