Book Reviews of Turn Left at Orion: A Hundred Night Sky Objects to See in a Small Telescope--and How to Find Them

Book Review: Every Astronomer Should Have This Book!
Summary: 5 Stars

"Turn Left At Orion" is one of those introductory books that should be automatically dispensed with every first telescope! Bro. Guy Consolmagno (a Jesuit friar who serves officially for the Vatican Observatory) has an easy-reading style that is aimed at the neophyte star-gazer. He purposely avoids much of the "geek-speak" associated with the hobby, and where he needs to bring up technical terms, he takes great pains to explain it first in very simple, layman's terms. The book is very down-to-earth for dealing with such a lofty subject.

The book is primarily composed of seasonal sky maps and telescope views of popular nighttime objects. Rather than using full-color, heavily processed Hubble images for all the objects (something no astronomer will EVER see through the eyepiece of an earth-bound instrument), they use black-and-white hand-drawn sketches of what each object appears like through a small aperture backyard telescope. Because the sketches are basically a "negative" of what you would see, the book lends itself to being taken outdoors with your scope and being a field guide (under red light to preserve your dark-adapted vision, of course.)

This latest incarnation of "Turn Left" also includes Southern Hemisphere objects, as well as some targets better suited for somewhat larger (8"-10") amateur instruments (the prices on larger scopes has come way down since the early 1980's when this was first written.) They've done a good job at keeping pace with accessibility to larger apertures while keeping that small scope feel to the overall work.

I can't recommend this book highly enough for those new to the hobby, or those who've been away as a "refresher course" volume.

Summary of Turn Left at Orion: A Hundred Night Sky Objects to See in a Small Telescope--and How to Find Them

A superb guidebook described in Bookwatch as 'the home astronomer's "bible"', Turn Left at Orion provides all the information beginning amateur astronomers need to observe the Moon, the planets and a whole host of celestial objects. Large format diagrams show these objects exactly as they appear in a small telescope and for each object there is information on the current state of our astronomical knowledge. Revised and updated, this new edition contains a chapter with ten new spreads describing spectacular deep sky objects visible from the southern hemisphere, and tips on observing the upcoming transits of Venus. It also discusses Dobsonian telescopes, with hints on using personal computers and the Internet as aids for planning an observing session. Also new to this edition are redrawn "Guidepost" figures at the beginning of each season chapter that allow readers to visualize a three-dimensional view of the sky's dome; redesigned seasonal object layouts that provide more space for the naked-eye charts; a new spread on double stars near Bo?tes has been added to Spring, replacing the "Shrinking Double" spread; and a unique "When and Where to Look" table has been added to the last page, among other new features. Unlike many guides to the night sky, this book is specifically written for observers using small telescopes. Clear and easy to use, this fascinating book will appeal to skywatchers of all ages and backgrounds. No previous knowledge of astronomy is needed.
