Book Review: A wickedly funny look at the world of servers in trendy restaurants
Summary: 4 Stars

Erin Edwards used to be an up-and-comer, a rising marking executive with a big future lined up. But when unemployment strikes, rent, and bills necessitate taking any job available, for Erin, that means taking an offer from a family friend to work at Roulette, a trendy new restaurant in Manhattan. Roulette is the kind of restaurant that Erin used to frequent herself, where a single drink costs upwards of fifteen dollars and some entrees can be sixty dollars or more. And being a waitress is not so easy, especially at an upscale restaurant where the owners and chef will do nearly anything to make customers happy and where any unhappy customer is the personal fault of the server in charge of their table. Now Erin must deal with her melodramatic bosses and a seemingly bi-polar head chef who seem to sense that she has no real business being there, all while dealing with newly-formed friendships with other members of the wait staff, picky customers, a new relationship, and the unexpected acquisition of a dog named Rocket. How long can she possibly last in a world where she doesn't really belong?

With //Turning Tables//, a book borne of their own experiences, Heather and Rose MacDowell have crafted a delightful look into what really goes on in the life of servers. Erin's misadventures in and out of the restaurant make for a breezy and almost guilty way to spend an afternoon. A fancy restaurant like Roulette is something that most people can't really comprehend outside of big cities like New York, so it's fun to get an insider's glimpse into how it all really works. The terror and social discomforts that Erin feels on a daily basis are realistic and make her a believable character, even if sometimes the situations she finds herself in are a bit contrived and some of her reactions are a bit (realistically) obtuse. Reading //Turning Tables// is a fun way to temporarily escape into a different world.

Summary of Turning Tables

Erin Edwards is an up-and-coming marketing exec who frequents New York?s hippest eateries?until the tables are turned. Now, newly unemployed, Erin only has days to transform herself into a first-class server at one of Manhattan?s top restaurants. Can she make it in a world where survival is all about?

Life behind the apron is even worse than Erin imagined?within days she finds herself in hot water with Roulette?s egomaniacal celebrity chef and the owner?s outrageous wife. And then there?s the surly, dismissive clientele?all but Daniel Fratelli, a flirtatious producer who may just be as nice as he seems. Determined not to crack under pressure, Erin sets out to master the art of waitressing?becoming part shrink, part slave, and part foie gras pusher. It seems like she?ll be hustling for that twenty percent for the rest of her life, until her quirky best friend comes up with the perfect recipe for success?or a second course of disaster.

In this smart, sexy, and wickedly observant novel, identical twins and onetime real-life waitresses Heather and Rose MacDowell bring a deliciously tart verisimilitude to the story of a young woman?s adventures at Manhattan?s most exclusive new haunt.
