Book Reviews of US Army Survival Manual: FM 21-76Book Review: A must have survival manual Summary: 4 Stars
I was a survival instructor when in the Marine Corps. This is a good manual to keep on hand and as part of your survival library. This manual has worked for many military and it will work for you too. There are a lot of basic things in it that will go a long way in just about any situation and location. I have trained from this manual and know first hand that it works.
Another comment said you can get it online free, but when the power goes down that won`t help you much now will it. And with the cost of paper and ink,it is cheaper to just buy it and have it on hand if needed.
Book Review: This is core survival information and education, a good buy. Summary: 5 Stars
This is core education that should be required for all. There is more than enough information here that has been proven time and time again that works. It will make you a better outdoors person, save your life and give you the information to make living off the land much easier. Small example, in the morning placing rags around your ankles and walking in high grass to collect the dew (water) off of the grass, so you can give yourself some drinking water. The manual is written to help ensure understanding, which is great for this type of stuff. Overall and very good buy.
Book Review: A true disappointment. Summary: 1 Stars
This book is very disappointing. Poorly written and with weak descriptions leaves the inexperienced outdoorsmen with a false sense of security. Just because there happens to be a section on a particular skill does not translate into the ability of the reader to follow the lousy instructions to complete said skill. If anyone wants to learn survival skills they would be well suited to take a course and view first-hand the execution of the skills by an experienced practitioner of them. Purchase another book and let this one pass.
Book Review: Ok... but there are better books out there Summary: 4 Stars
While I enjoyed reading the U.S. Army Survival Manual I would not recommend it as my only survival learning text. For that honor, I prefer Gregory Davenport's book, "Wilderness Survival", which covers the same material but in a far more user friendly format. Mr. Davenport's book goes beyond the ARMY manual by giving the step by step instructions needed to do the survival tasks related to clothing, shelter, fire, water and food procurement, etc. In addition, his navigation and health chapters are far superior.
Book Review: A must-have book Summary: 5 Stars
I'm a lonely hiker/climber, as I go outdoor for training and to shoot photos, and if I can suggest the ONE book you'll allow to add some weight to your backpack when you're out there for some days, alone, you've found it! Lots of infos, clearly explained, nothing left to the imagination, but effective and SAFE hints on how to get off troubles, if any. It's a good book both for unexperienced and serious hikers. I serviced in the army as an officer, and believe me, these things really work out there! Excellent!
