Book Reviews of Ultra Black Hair Growth II 2000 Edition

Book Review: Excellent !!
Summary: 5 Stars

First some background info. I am a 31 year old wife & mother of two boys who has worn braids or weaves ( or braid weaves :)) since I was 14 years old with a few fake ponytails in between. My mother relaxed my hair when I was 5 years old (her own hair is in very bad shape and she wears wigs) and by the time I was 9 I had my first experience but not my last with hair loss. By the time I was 12 my hair fell out again as a relaxer was applied over a jerri curl. Thank the Lord that my scalp was not damaged and it does grow. It just does not stay. Once it hits about 7-8 inches the ends become very dry, weaken and begin to split and break down to the new growth. It just seemed safer to keep my own hair covered and wear other people's hair. Now, I'm sick of it and want to learn how to take care of my own relaxed hair as I plan to have a daughter and do not want her to suffer as I have ( I'd never relax her head until she's a teen if she wanted to, of course). My goal is 12 inches to my now 7 inches by January 2007 with trims every six months to keep the length even not the misguided belief trimming helps it to grow. My hair grows even when I've had it in braids or weaves for months without ever seeing a scissor's blades. I almost didn't buy this book based on those who said that it read like an cheap advertisement for her products. I am so glad I used my better judgement and purchased her book along with her conditioner and creme moisturizer from her website. A question for those put off a bit by her letting us know about her products... did you at least try them ? I understand if you tried them & they didn't work and now you have a legitimate issue with the products. I amm also grateful that I do not have to sit in my kitchen trying to mix up hair care products. One reviewer put the ingredients in her conditioner in her review. My hats off to you if you have the time, but personally I will not be traveling all the way back to the city (I live in upstate NY )or searching the web to find all those ingredients when I can click my computer's mouse, order everything at once and the UPS man drops them on my front door. My hair has never been so healthy within the 5 weeks I have been using her methods ( washing Wednesday and Saturday, deep conditioning 2x weekly with her conditioner, using her creme moisturizer daily,air-drying, etc. ) as my hair was super dry and brittle but not anymore. I got compliments from the first day of using them. When you need to use products she doesn't manufacture herself she tells you what and where to buy them( on her website) . Let's be logical. What is the issue that she uses a few lines to tell about the products she developed out of her own frustation and need so we do not have to waste our hard earned money on trail and error in the beauty supply stores? As a good businesswoman she is providing solutions to problems. A book disseminates information and this is all she is doing with her information as well as her products. It is still your choice to purchase her products or not. If we knew what to do and what to buy then there would be no need for the book but there is a true need. Personally, I have been able to get rid of no less than 7 bottles of products that were doing my hair more harm than good. Some also are taken aback by her disposition. I personally like her straight-forwardness.
Although she does tell of what may seem like somewhat minor things that have happened to her or her associates I think she is trying to make a point that those we traditionally trust to take care of our hair sometimes are just as ignorant, are worried more about losing money if a client should become less dependent on them for hair care, or are sometimes just plain deceitful. Overall, I think she is trying to empower us to take more responsibility for our hair care and how to do it correctly. I also do not agree with everything in her book such as taking in more protein will results in more body weight. I think that depends. I drink a whey protein shake Monday -Friday for breakfast the past 7 years and it has help improved my hair, skin and nails as well as my weight. I also would not take extra iron as I think I get enough in my meat-based diet.I also think extra iron should be taken by those with a true diagnosed deficiency. In spite of this, her plan is super simple and that is what we need.We just need to be committed to her suggestions. I'll update this review in a year to see if my six inches of hair growth have stayed on my head. But, with her very gentle methods and very little heat, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. CLEAN HAIR with REAL MOISTURE, ladies, with the RIGHT PRODUCTS to maintain it is the key. Blessings

Book Review: Vanity Is Insanity
Summary: 5 Stars

I think Cathy Howse is a God Sent!!! The information she discloses is revolutionary. I was searching the net wanting to get more information on caring for black hair, and when I stumbled onto her website I was astonished. The information regarding the physiological and anatomical structure of hair, and the processes of hair cells and sebaceous oil glands is absolutely correct. As a psychology professional and nursing student I know this to be true, which makes me wonder if her professionalism is in the field of healthcare. I certainly feel that cosmetologists, and most people in general for that matter, need more education regarding the physiology of how the body works. If this knowledge was gained we as black women would not fall for the silly myths that have pervaded our culture regarding our "bad hair". Cathy dispells these myths by offering practical solutions and excellent products to help women learn how to care for their own hair. We as black women love to support our hair dressers, and there's nothing wrong with that, but we need to draw the line, especially when we're made to feel like strangers to our own hair. If a hairdresser tells us to hop on two legs, pour baby powder and cow dung over our heads we'd do it just to see a little hair growth. Even though none of that has anything to do with the practical physiology of what makes hair grow. In Cathy's book, she knows what she's talking about. She offers suggestions for certain shampoos, and hair polishers, as well as other practical advice for caring for hair on her website-a great addition to information you read in the book. She's an African American entrepreneur, of course she wants to prosper that's in God's will for her as well as all of us, so why not support her especially if she's revealing credible information. My advice is that we as Black women need to stop obsessing over our hair-that vanity is insanity. Even when someone like Cathy, or any other person who gives good advice regarding hair care, tells us what we need to do we still are too stubborn to listen. End up doing stupid things, like buying products from manufacturers who we don't know, trying to treat our own hair when we don't know the reasons behind what we're doing-at least she's giving reasons as to why our hair tends to be damaged, and products to help. And if you don't want to buy her products, she certainly is quite revealing-on her website-as far as what ingredients we should look for in purchasing other products. I have healthy hair, and have always had healthy hair because I never bought into the fact that my hairdresser knows more about my hair than I do. I didn't buy her products as another desperate person trying to do what someone else says, so that I can be rescued from my "bad hair". I don't know her, never even heard about her until I started searching the web. I saw her picture on the book cover, just like I've seen other pictures of black women with long wigs, selling products for hair growth. She claims this is her hair so why shouldn't I believe her, I have long beautiful hair myself, and it's not an impossibility for black women to have beautiful hair-and not be a hair stylist. Whether it's her hair or not is not what made me buy her book, I bought her book and products because she reiterates everything I've always believed. I researched the ingredients in her products and found that they are quite nutritional for black women's hair. I can't argue with the facts. How she answers questions on the website, or whether or not she's wearing a wig is not my concern. My concern is that the information she discloses has proven to be true in my experience. Now my hair is even healthier than it has ever been becuse she's taught me even more. My Black sistas, you have beautiful hair, not "bad hair". Love your hair, and stop obsessing over it...give it time to grow by recognizing what is needed...stop falling for the marketing set-ups, trying to look like that red-headed, or blond-haired person in the magazine ad-who's getting paid to maintain that look. Stop putting all kinds of chemicals and treatments on your hair just because the bottle says it's good for you. And stop frequenting hair stylists who put on a good front like they know what they're doing, yet they don't. Stop getting hustled, and embrace the beautiful woman that you are...because this vanity is insanity!

PART TWO- REVIEW 2 READ BELOW FOR REVEIW 1
EVERY ONE HAS THERE OWN OPINION, October 21, 2004
Reviewer: 21 YEAR OLD YOUNG LADY "21 AND LOVING IT" (OVERSEAS) - See all my reviews
TODAY IS 21 OCT 04. I HAVE RECIEVED HER BOOK AND PRODUCTS. HER BOOK IS NOT LENGHTY AT ALL. AS SHE STATES IN HER BOOK, VERY MUCH, IT IS ABOUT HAVING COMMON SENSE. I DID NOT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT HAIR CARE, SO THIS BOOK GAVE ME A LOT OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT MY HAIR CARE. SHE DOES MENTION HER PRODUCTS. COME ON PEOPLE, SHE HAS PRODUCTS, SO WHY NOT TALK ABOUT THEM? YA KNOW!! IN FACT, SHE SPEAKS ABOUT HER 3 DIFFERENT PRODUCTS ON THE CHAPTER WHERE IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE DISCUSSED IN.IN THE CHAPTER ABOUT BRUSHING, SHE IS NOT TALKING ABOUT NO BRUSHING, THEN BRINGS UP ( HOW ABOUT GOING TO THE SITE AN ORDER MY PRODUCT, IT IS THE BEST!!) SHE DOES NOT DO THAT ALL. EVERY TIME SHE SPOAKS ABOUT HER PRODUCT, IT IS IN THE CORRECT CHAPTER. SHE SPEAKS ABOUT THEM JUST ENOUGH. YOU WILL HAVE TO GFO OUT AND GET YOUR OWN SHAMPOO. HER PRODUCTS DO NOT COME WITH SHAMPOO. I HER BOOK SHE DOES MENTION A COUPLE OF SHAMPOOS THAT SHE USED, BUT TO ME, WHICH I DID NOT LIKE, SHE DID NOT MENTION ENOUGH. BUT IF YOU TAKE THE INGREDIENTS THAT SHE MENTIONS ABOUT WHAT YOUR SHANMPOO SHOULD CONTAIN OR DO, YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO IND THE CORRECT SHAMPOO VERY EASILY. THAT IS A FACT. THE SHAMPOO I AM USING IS PANTENE PRO V FOR RELAXED HAIR. IT HAS SOME OF THE NECCESARY THINGS THAT SHE SPEAKS ABOUT. HER PRODUCTS TO ME ARE VERY NICE. I HAVE NEVER CONDITIONED MY HAIR THEN SIT UNDER A DRYER BEFORE. NOW THAT I HAVE TRIED IT, I WILL BE DOING IT ONCE EVERY WEEK FROM NOW ON!! I HAVE NAPPY RELAXED HAIR, BUT ONCE I MOISTURIZE, IT BECOMES NICE AND SOFT LOOKING AGAIN. IN FACT, FOR THE LAST WEEK, IT STAYS LOOKING SOFT. NOW FOR THE BRUCHING PART, IF YOU DO NOT COVER YOUR HAIR WHEN YOU GO TO SLEEP, AND YOU SLEEP WILD, YOU WILL MOST DEFINATELY NEED TO BRUSH YOUR CRAZY, TANGLED HAIR. I TIE MY HARI DOWN EVERY NIGHT BEFORE I GO TO SLEEP. WHEN I AWAKE, ALL I DO IS JUST PASS MY HAND OVER IT, OR COMB THE WIDE TOOTH COME THROUGH IT. ( NOW REMEBER, I HAVE NAPPY RELAXED HAIR). I MEAN, AT LEAST READ THE BOOK FIRST, GIVE IT A TRY FOR AT LEAST A MONTH, THEN PUT DOWN YOUR COMMENTS, GOOD OR BAD. HOW CAN YOU JUDGE SOMETHING, NO MATTER WHAT IT IS, IF YOU DID NOT COMPLETE IT?
THINK ABOUT IT!!
I WILL BE BACK TO POST ANOTHER REVIEW IN THE JANUARY 05.
THIS IS MY SECOND ONE.
I STILL GIVE THIS 5 STARS*****

PART ONE- REVIEW ONE
I AM AM A BLACK FEMALE THAT JUST TOOK OUT MICRO BRAIDS, AND MY HAIR ON THE SIDES FELL DRAMATICALLY. IN FACT I ONLY HAD MY MICROS IN FOR ONE MONTH. MOUSSE AND PUMP IT UP SPRITZ AND GREESE IS WHAT WAS USED ON MY HAIR THROUGH THE WHOLE PROCESS. AS I COMED THE WEAVE OUT, MY HAIR CAME OUT TO WITH NO EFFORT AT ALL FROM ME. I HAVE NOT TRIED THE BOOK, BUT I AM WILLING TO GICE IT A TRY. YOU CAN NOT JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER. ALSO, IF YOU JUST READ THE BOOK AND DID NOT AT LEAST TO ATTEMPT TO TRY THE PROCESS, THEN YOU DO NOT HAVE A SAY IN THIS, CAUSE YOU DID NOT COMPLETE THE STEPS. MY BOOK AND HAIR PRODUCTS ARE ON ITS WAY AS OF TODAY, 1 OCT 04. I WILL BE POSTING ANOTHER REVIEW AFTER I READ THE BOOK. AND ALSO ANOHTER REVIEX AS I START THE PROCESS. MY HAIR IS NOT IN VERY GOOD SHAPE AT ALL. UNEVEN, THIN, THICK IN SOME PLACES, SEE THROUGH HAIR, BOLD SIDES, SPLIT ENDS, SHALL I GO ON? OH AND ALSO MY TOP HAIR IS OVER MY BACH HAIR/KITCHEN AREA. WEIRD HUH?:) MY WEEKLY HAIR STYLES INCLUDE WEAVE AND GLUE AND GEL. I WANT TO GET AWAY FROM ALL THAT. MY HAIR DRESSER TOLD ME NEXT TIME I COME FOR A TRIM, THAT SHE WILL CUT ALL MY HAIR OFF AND SHE WILL TREAT IT. BUT I WILL SHOW HER. I AM GOING TO READ THIS BOOK, DO THE STEPS, AND HAVE A GREAT TEXTURE AND LENGTH OF HAIR WHEN I RETURN. IF I DO..LOL

SO LADIES, JUST GIVE THE BOOK AND THE STEPS A CHANCE BEFORE YOU PLACE A NEGATIVE REVIEW. COMPLETION IS THE KEY TO SUCCESS

Book Review: SPECTACULAR, from Charlotte, North Carolina
Summary: 5 Stars

I ran across Cathy's website on 23Apr05 while looking for a vendor who sold Mizani relaxers, her site just pooped up I was about to erase it, began reading some of the things that she had to say. I was blown away about my ignorance of how to take better care of my hair. It all boils down to what she repeatedly states in her book Common Sense. Just when you think you know it all when you really don't especially if you look at your head with all your hair falling out. I began using her tips on 26Apr05 while still reading her site (which i read the in its entirety) I decided to try out her products, ordered everything, they arrived on 3May05. I must admit I was very anxious as all the others have testified to began the program. I was 4 wks into my store bought optimum relaxer and decided to wait before another application. I implemented the tips from the book, that is a easy read and was amazed. side note:(for those who got flustered and wanted, illustrations, pictures etc., barbie has a nice book about how to care for her and other dolls hair complete with a plastic comb, brush and rubber bands, that book is very informative and will truely hold your hand, while your continuing to become bald). I could not believe the condition of my hair after using her products, as her book states shampoo once, protein condition (if alot of breakage), ubh condition (or dew) under hooded dryer, rinse in shower, do not comb while wet, air dry, moisterize daily. I have had very minimal breakage, I inspect the hair as stated in the book, and yes I notice the hairs are longer and have a white ball on the tip which indicates true shedding and not breaking. I am very grateful to Cathy for her research, time and dedication, to a much needed cause, I read every review on this site and hers, all I can say for the ones who her system/products did not work for then go find another system, just please do not try to knock her at least give her 5 stars for being and ordinary person who just wanted answers for those of us who are making the WHITE mans pocket thicker by selling us useless products. Everything does not work for everyone. I also must say that while reading her site and the book I did not think she was being rude or harsh with her abruptness, sometimes people just don't get it and you have to explain it to them like a 2yr old but and for some reason that I cannot answer, people will ask the same question 10 different ways even though she would have just stated the answer from a previous question, that is why the need for such repeativeness in her book people tend to not really pay attention until something is drilled into them. She tells it like it is without sugar coating the message, it does shock when you realize she is telling the truth about common sense hair maintenance and we all know the saying about how the truth hurts. I feel that those who submitted the negative reviews want Nice well this is not a nice world and she has every right to promote her products in her book now wouldn't it be stupid if she were advertising Alberto Vo5, Suave, Dove shampoos, cond. etc. in her book instead of her products, would you do it if it were your product I think not. I am not saying to buy her product or not I am simply stating my experience from her book/tips with it since I began is amazing and I cannot wait to see the results and I will continue to purchase her products read the most informative book and support her in any way that I can. What one needs to be writing about is why has this black women been on Oprah, if it were someone white they would have been on th show 15yrs ago. Thank you Cathy Howse for everything I will help you in your crusade in informing the other sisters out there about your Book & Wonderful products

Book Review: UBHGII has been a lifesaver!
Summary: 5 Stars

I first came across UBHGII while I was on the net trying to get as much information as I could on addressing the needs of my hair. I was having problems following the use of Rio products-yes, I made a grievous mistake, and believe me for the last seven years I have been paying for it-severe breakage, dryness, lack of texture-it didn't feel real; and no visible growth at all. And, yet it was not my hair I was concerned about. I have 4 little girls ages 12, 11 10, and 7-that means I have alot of hair to take care of. I relunctantly made the decision to put a perm in the 3 older children's hair, and shortly after that, breakage. I couldn't believe the amount of breakage we experiended. My girls went from having hair that hung just below their shoulders to hanging just at their ear lobes. My heart was broken. It's one thing for me to mess up my hair, but it's a far more serious situation for me when it comes to my children. With tears in my eyes, I promised them I would learn how to properly care for their hair, and I would do something to help facilitate growth. I frantically got out on the internet, and started reading all the information I could find. One day, I came across UBHGII. Immediately, I was impressed with the before and after pictures of Mrs. Howse. As I browsed her sight, reading all the information, I became increasingly more interested, so I ordered the book. As soon as I got the book in the mail, I practically inhaled it. I must say, I found it to be so refreshing. Many of the questions I had struggled with were answered in the pages of that book. I couldn't believe the wealth of information. Important things, like the need for protein to rebuild your hair following chemicals. I had always, always put conditioner in the girls hair. How was I to know it was just being rinsed down the drain. Everything I had learned, all the myths about our hair were suddenly gone, and I was left with-truth. I now had something I could work with.

Well, I have been using the products for six months. I have seen more growth, in the last six months than I have in the last seven years since RIO. My hair feels like hair, again. But, the most exciting thing has been the benefits to my children's hair. It has been in such good condition. And, we are beginning to really see the benefits of using the "Howse Method". I immediately went out and got a heatcap once UBHGII explained the importance of heat when conditioning. My girls now wash their hair and get under the heat cap every week. They are getting to the point where they enjoy, and look forward to washing, and conditioning their hair. It's not just something they have to do-it has become something they want to do. They moisturize everyday, and are really doing well.

I am so thankful they have the opportunity to learn how to care for their hair at an early age, and can avoid many of the mistakes I have made.

Thank you Mrs. Howse for taking the time to learn how to care for our hair, and then sharing your findings with others.

M Patterson
