Book Reviews of Ultra Black Hair Growth II 2000 EditionBook Review: Just ordered Cathy's Book Summary: 3 Stars
GAVE THE BOOK 2 stars, i will rate it again when i have actually read the book.Like many other African Americans I am looking for ways to maintain a healthy head of hair, that will not only grow but it will look like a million bucks. I have read most of the reviews on here, and I must say that I am kinda skeptical about this book (and I am also wondering if I am wasting my money buying Cathy's Book). After further consideration I realize that I have tried nearly every other products and recommendations possibly so trying the system mentioned is this book is just like the others (it can either succeed or fail) and if it fails I will move on to another system until I find the one that's right for my hair. As i have stated before, I haven't read the book as yet, but as soon as I get it (July 15, 2004) I will read it and post my OPINION on here. I have seen where numerous reviewers stated that Cathy is advertising her products within the book but after visiting her website I saw where she stated that YOU SHOULD USE PRODUCTS THAT WORK BEST FOR YOU (the products she makes and uses are one and the same, so of course that's what she is going to mention). Personally I have tried and fell in love with the MIZANI system, where I use their sensitive relaxer, their moisturizing shampoo and Hydrafuse conditioner, and their H20 nighttime treatment (which I love, in three weeks I have seen a vast difference in my hair, next to no breakage) I also use Revlon's ZP-11 Antidandruff hairdressing (used after every hair wash) because I have a really bad case of dandruff problem. So reading Cathy's book does not mean that I am changing my hair products, it simply means that I am starting to educate myself on how to care for and maintain a healthy head of hair. YOU CAN TAKE THE KNOWLEDGE WITHOUT THE PRODUCTS. Hope this make sense to you all, I will post my opinion on the book within the next 3 weeks.
Book Review: General Comments Summary: 3 Stars
Cathy wrote about relaxer being combed through the new growth. I don't think relaxer should ever be combed through the new growth. The relaxer should be SMOOTHED through the new growth. One can use parts of the comb to do that, but never the comb teeth.
Cathy uses peppermint oil and menthol as stimulants in her conditioner. (Essential peppermint oil with the botanical name "mentha arvensis" already has a high menthol content, and is commonly used for cosmetic purposes). The essential oils of Rosemary, Yarrow and Grapefruit also stimulate the scalp.
Thanks Michelle for posting the UBH conditioner recipe. Thank you, Saquilla S. Hall, for telling us about Aubrey Organics GPB conditioner that is sold at the VitaminShoppe and other stores. The ingredients list for the GPB conditioner has protein, oils, a stimulant (Organic Rosemary Oil) and no alcohol.
On a side note, Cathy's refusal to share her conditioner recipe is not helping her business. Another wise business move would have been to put the original recipe for her conditioner in the 2000 book, and give her readers the option of buying her product. By doing so, she'd increase the value of her book. Since there's a greater demand for her books than her products, she's sure to generate more revenue for her business by including the recipe. Also, she'd develop good-will, which is a business asset that is worth more than any profit she's now making off her products. Moreover, she'd still continue to profit from making her conditioner, because many consumers would appreciate buying it, instead of purchasing and mixing the ingredients ourselves. In addition, consumers will support businesses they believe are working in their best interests, regardless of whether they NEED that business's services or products. She needs a few meetings with a good business planner.
Book Review: More black women need to read this book Summary: 5 Stars
I have never really had any serious problems with my hair like going bald or fall-out or extreme breakage, however I have experienced breakage and dryness throughout my years of taking care of my hair. All my life I have had thick shoulder length hair and when I went to college, with the hard water and "in hairstyles" I started to realize that I was no longer taking care of my hair properly. First off, I wacked it down to about an inch all over and shaved in the back, ear down. I loved the cut and in a sense wanted to start over, fresh. I had to do something so I started doing the things my mom used to do, wash it with products for dry hair, detangle while wet, etc. My hair started growing again, but the same way you learn as you go, you can always learn more. Then I got on the internet and started searching. I found ubh publications and decided to order Mrs. Howse's book. The book was not expensive so what did I have to lose. I am so glad I bought the book, not only did it reinforce what I already knew but it gave me a positive outlook as to what my hair can look like if I keep doing the things that I have been doing (consistently). In about 2 more years my hair will probably be down to my waist! (It is a little past shoulder length now, layered) I have no problem in wacking my hair off and sporting a "Halle Berry", or "Toni Braxton in the old days" cut but now I know that I don't HAVE to have short hair. It's a decision YOU make. You can let it grow and take care of it, or cut it off and take care of it. Black women let's do our research on the hair care industry and stop abusing our hair with all these products and curling irons and blow dryers (all the time, sometimes is okay). Let's grow some long hair so we can throw it behind our shoulders and let it blow in the wind, I am on my way! God Bless everyone!
Book Review: I was disappointed... Summary: 3 Stars
Cathy Howse is a talented black woman who wrote this book for black woman who are trying to grow their hair, but she is also a woman trying to feed her family. I was disappointed with the books instructions and the extremely narrow and limited list of products that she suggested or didn't suggest. She doesn't really explain the types of conditioners and shampoos (there are other products out there besides her own, which she pushes shamlessly).
There are a wide variey of products that have been put on the market since the writing of her first book and this book, and I felt she should have listed some of them.
Basically it's trial and error YOU have to find what works for YOU, whether it's her products or not. Also her website criticizes other authors for doing the same thing she did: writing a book about their experiences and what worked for them. She endorses no-lye relaxers and doesn't take into consideration that it does not matter if it's lye or not it a chemical that alters your hair and needs to be applied by someone who knows what they are doing be it yourself or a licensed cosmotologist.
She seems the need to be in control which is why she says that marcel irons and pressing combs should be banned and you should only use electric appliances (which can be heat controlled).
Once again if YOU know what YOU'RE doing or are going to a hairdresser who's knows what their doing marcel irons should not be a problem.
And what is her problem with brushing! Yeah you'll go bald if you brush you hair everyday with a hard military brush! I use a 100% natural bore bristle brush which is very soft. I use it once a week and I don't rake it through my hair! The book had some good points, but overall save your money because you'll have to figure out what works for you anyway. As for me I'm going natural!
Book Review: Better late then never!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I searched on the internet under dry hair after trying everything and any advice. I have two girls 7 and 9. The 9 year old blessed with fine hair which is manageable but the 7 year old like me needed a miracle for dry, itchy scalp and breaking hair. I came across Cathy Howse website. I read it inside out and decided to try it. I thought too it was a little pricey but when I compared it to what I was giving the salon every two weeks, it actually was a lot cheaper for alot more hairdo's. I have followed her program using her products. Some people have different complaints about her, but thats whats wrong with our community, always looking for something for nothing. A hand out. Since I have started using her products(just a few weeks)I have gotton compliments from friends, family and co-workers who ask me what have I changed. Most think its the hairdresser. My stylist, a girlfriend, even had to admit that my hair was fuller and healthier. The book gave me info. I needed that is not common. It definitely helped to know to shampoo twice a week, minimum once a week instead of the myth of two to three weeks and that frequent shampooing drys the hair out of it's natural oils. I found out my scalp was itchy and terrible, not because of scalp condition. It was dirty! Then I added grease and oil to the dirt trying to sooth the scalp. My daughters even commented how they have seen change with their soft and healthier hair. Cathy Howse is to the point and doesn't sugar coat. For all the sensitive people, I know kindness goes a long way but when you form bad habits over a period of time, telling you once nicely and that's it doesn't help to break the habit. I will continue to use the products and info. given as this is the only one I have seen to work as of yet. Get the book and try it before you knock it. Thank you Cathy!!!!
