Book Reviews of Ultra Black Hair Growth II 2000 EditionBook Review: Honestly Works Summary: 4 Stars
I read Cathy Howse's book about 5 years ago and began following her regimen. My hair health and length immediately improved, although my hair wasn't damaged that badly and was already shoulder length. Most of her tips were things I was either aware of or already doing, for example moisturizing and conditioning. I think her emphasis on moisturizing EVERY day without exception and deep conditioning with heat EVERY single time you wash your hair are the important and priceless pointers. I bought both moisturizers she sells however once I ran out, I experienced the WORST breakage of my life. This may have been due to the braids I had put in, the fact that I moved and switched stylists, or my internal health - but whatever it was I was not pleased. Recently my cousin asked me about her regimen, remembering how extremely long my hair had grown while following it. I thought to myself "why did I ever stop using her products and following her regime?" and bought her dew and creme moisturizers. Immediately I noticed a vast improvement in my hair. I must say her moisturizers do EXACTLY what she claims they do - the conditioners I haven't tried. I totally agree with moisturizing every day, washing hair at least 1X per week, and deep conditiong everytime you wash your hair. I also began to air dry my hair whenever time permits which I thought was a helpful hint. The only thing Ms. Howse stresses that I don't totally ascribe to is the need to completely abolish the use of hair brushes. I do rely more on combs to style my hair but I did not notice that occasional and infrequent use of brushes for achieving smoothness in certain styles was damaging. I agree that most of the points can be obtained from the website, but it is nice to have them in an organized and very easy readable book. I do recommend the book.
Book Review: The RESPONSE TO THESE OTHER REPONSES Summary: 5 Stars
Well, first of all, I would like to say is that I read the book myself, despite some negative feedback from readers. Although, I gave the book a 5-star rating(I enjoyed it), I would REALLY give it a three. In my opinion, GOOD THING:I think Ms. Howse did a great job on desrcribing what our hair needs and certain ingredients we should look for but(BAD THING) I don't think she listed enough ingredients. BAD THING:I felt that she sometimes would contradict herself. (I don't have the book with me as a ref.). GOOD THING:Alot of people were actually looking forward for her to list the products she uses but she didn't and I think it's good that she didn't. The products that she uses may not go with my hair or some other's person hair. We respond to the same thing, differently. BAD THING:Another thing that I disagree with her is that she thinks hairbrushes breaks the hair. I don't think so. MAybe it damaged her hair but it may not damage mine(if I use it properly)....also mentions using the curling iron as a straightner....a flat iron on low heat seating will suit me fine, especially for the roots...but otherwise than that, I like her book and I learned some few things, like deep conditioning every week and keeping the ends in good health. I READ some OTHER REPONSES AND I DON'T THINK PEOPLE SHOULD TRY TO MANIPULATE OTHER PEOPLE INTO NOT BUYING THE BOOK BECAUSE A MAN'S GARBAGE MAY BE ANOTHER MAN'S TREASURE. THE BOOK DIDN'T FIT OTHER PEOPLE BUT OTHER PEOPLE MAY LOVE THIS BOOK. AND WHAT IF THE PERSON LOVED THE BOOK SO MUCH THAT they SAY TO BUY THE BOOK? PEOPLE SHOULDN'T DO THAT BECAUSE IF other PEOPLE LISTEN TO THAT, BUY THE BOOK, it's a possibility they MAY END UP NOT LIKING the book...but anyway...i ordered her black conditioner, and i hope it's what I am expecting...peace people.
Book Review: Best Book - the leader of it's kind. Summary: 5 Stars
Cathy's book is informative. Who cares that she may seem rude - she knows her stuff! I picked up the book two years ago. I waited to write a review because I wanted to try it out myself.
I also have read Shamboosie's book, Lisa Akbari's book and No Lye!. Shamboosie's book is a basic advertisement for Nexxus and Dudley products. Lisa's book didn't really contain any new information - plus it was questionable if she actually addressed the black hair type that most of us share. Out of them all, I liked Cathy's book. Shamboosie just had regular looking people in his book, besides one token person with long hair. Cathy has actual photos of people who have used her method - and it's more than one person (...)
Cathy's book makes sense - the more you condition, moisturize and give your hair gentle care the better it grows. For instance, my hair was in a short style with tapered sides and edges two years ago. Now, my hair is to my shoulders and it's very shiny and healthy. It has never been this long before without breaking off. Try her method with good products. I'm not necessarily an advocate for her products - although you can try them. I've tried a gang of them and thrown them out. However, I do keep the following stock: Cathy's daily creme moisturizer - it is truly the best moisturizer that I have found that doesn't tend to be drying, dulling, weighty or greasy. I also use AVEDA anti-humectant pomade - it smells good and gives huge shine. For conditioner, I use Aubrey Organics GPB (found at the VitaminShoppe and other stores - it makes your hair soft but has protein to strength your hair. Cathy has a conditioner but this one seems to give the same effect while keeping the hair soft.
Book Review: Rochelle From Texas Summary: 3 Stars
I haven't recieved Cathy's book at this point, however it's on its way!! I've been reading other reviews and have noticed a mixutre of points of view, some good and other not so good.I have very, very soft hair. With having this type of hair I realize that I cannot use heavey oils or cremes on my hair. I purchased Cathy's book due to her website and I wanted to peruse the documentation for myself before getting into detail about my personal point of view about the book. The one thing that I strongly disagree with is the trimming of the dead ends. Yes, your hair can grow with them, however your hair will not look as neat and healthy as it should. I'm an Aveda and Redken fan and soon to be a Frederic Fekkai fan, very good products, however, I do need the moisture to keep my hair heathly and strong. I did notice a recipe for the conditioner, I may add those oils to my Fortifying conditioner. Like others, I've worn the short styles and long styles. But I have to say I prefer the long styles. Today 02/09/06 I threw away my brush, I already shampoo my hair once a week, but in reality I need to shampoo every 4 to 5 days. I'm so happy that someone took the time to give us a reminder of what we already know to do and give help to others that are lost in this world of hair care. Once I recieve my book I'll will revisit the site and express my thoughts to you. I'LL give Cathy 3 stars just because of her concern for us cogent women of color. However after I put her suggestions to work (other than the trimming of ends, I have very good hairstylist that correctly trims dead and split ends),then I'll adjust her rating at that time. I believe that would be the sage thing to do. May we encourage each other to reach our hair goals.
Book Review: Excellent for RELAXED HAIR NOT SO GREAT IF UR NATURAL Summary: 3 Stars
IF YOU HAVE A PRESS AND CURL, DON'T BOTHER WITH THIS BOOK. This book really was common sense. I've worked in the hair industry for quite some time now, though not a stylist. I bought this book for help on growing my natural hair as long as possible. I found that while she has wonderful products and advise, that some of the advise falls flat when it comes to styling and caring for natural hair, especially if you intend on pressing your hair. She suggests using water-based products twice daily. REALLY girls, for those of us who press and curl or blowdry/flat iron our hair straight that AIN'T happening.. Sure if you braid, twist or have locks or where a 'fro or where it curly it would be great, but if u want to straighten ur hair naturally, she offers no assistance. SHE EVEN ADMITS toward the end, after continuously touting that u can use the program even if u have a press and curl, that SHE ACTUALLY WROTE THE BOOK FOR WOMEN WITH RELAXED HAIR and that if you don't have a relaxer you may find the program difficult to adhere to. I've been natural for seven years and always wore twists and braids, decided I was ready for a change and would press it. I love the press and curl, and already wash my hair every four days and at least once a week as she suggests, but the everyday water moisture just doesn't help me, I did realize however that I should write a book, because of all the ones I've read, there is always something missing, I already know all of the information they're sharing. But no one writes for the natural black girl/woman who wants to play with her options . THIS BOOK SHOULD ONLY BE MARKETED TO BLACK WOMEN WITH RELAXERS. PERIOD
