Book Review: Good Book with Good Tips, But ...
Summary: 3 Stars

I went on Cathy Howse's web site and read about her products and all the testimonials. I thought "this is too good to be true." I have to admit, though, that Cathy had very good points in "back to basic" hair care. However, I found her pushing her products as being better than any other product out there.

The testimonials were convincing, so I thought I'd give her products a try. For the first two months (following her "wash your hair every three days or, at the most, once a week" regimen with her Deep Penetrating Conditioner (with proten, to harden your hair), followed by "an instant conditoner to soften the hair shaft"), I saw some improvement in my hair. But as I continued to follow her regimen, I began to experience more breakage. Why do you need to condition your hair twice over?

I went back to using my products and have seen a major improvement. Sure, I believe that you should deep condition your hair once a week, but using your own conditioner can work just as well. My hairdresser has taught me this and now I experience almost little to no breakage.

As far as using a hair brush, I don't believe that most women of color follow the "100 strokes a day" to distribute oils in their hair -- it is abusive. But I do believe we use the brush to help style our hair.

They say when something is too good to be true, it usually is. I don't regret investing in her book. If I may offer advice, use caution in buying her products. I believe if you use the products you usually buy and follow her guidelines, you will have success in achieving long hair.

Book Review: Disappointed
Summary: 2 Stars

This book is extremely repetitive. I agree with the reviewer, who recommended just reading the author's website. There is no definitive information and sometimes contradictory. In hopes of finding the original recipe for her homemade conditioner, I purchased the earlier book at over $40. Again major disappointment-it must have been updated and deleted. Only the ad for purchasing the author's conditer. There are no pictures other than the cover. And most conditioners and shampoos do not list the PH balance, which the author posts as very important to know. I would have preferred the tips in a pamphlet and the original recipe now that I have bought two books. I hope someone writes reviews about the author's products. Maybe they are better than the book. All in all, I found this book to be extremely disappointing. Quite honestly, I think I'll continue using The Jane Carter Solutions program (available at Amazon; www.Janecartersolution.com; Whole Foods stores and The Vitamin Shoppes)because I have seen the successful results.

July 13, 20009: Note: Add a Star..
In search for Kathy Houses' recipe (which I did not find, but others were kind enough to share, Thanks!), I went to her website and took a chance and ordered her products. I would add a star if I could for her products. The condiitoner is really thick, substantial and neither the daily or deep conditioner feels oily in the slightest. The Dew is nice. Both are offered in larger quantities, but same $$ amount as Jane Carter. So, here's hoping the products and regimen will produce the same results as the authors.

Book Review: Come on ladies!-Let's have patience to see the truth!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I personally have watched and read her site for about a year. I FINALLY decided to buy the book after reading EVERY SINGLE bit of info she has posted. Ok, I have the book and I have read it. Read it in one day, and have new insight to information I never knew.
I decided to buy her products, but as she requested, give it a year to test her method. I bought a year's worth of products to start. Her conditioner is AMAZING, her dew I still question just because I haven't seen the results I need yet from it. I may try her lotion instead( lotions just seem to work better for me). Yes, there has been a change since I have followed her method, and its only been 8weeks since I have started the program.
I intend on giving a review every 3 months and I also take pictures of my hair to SEE my results first hand. Ladies who worry about her criticizing others, let it be, its apart of her marketing strategy to get her message across. What us ladies need to be worrying about is actually giving her method a TRY just like we have given the " quick fix, hair growth fast in 10 days" companies who have wasted our money already.
Just be glad that she isnt just about a product and is about daily care, because truth be told, if there are products that have what she recommends all the way, you are set AND you STILL gotta thank her for work because you wouldnt have known about what to look for or what to do without her book. In short form DONT HATE, be that female we congratulate because of her LONG, BEAUTIFUL, HEALTHY hair growth. Peace out!

Book Review: New and responsible hair care
Summary: 5 Stars

I've found myself experimenting with different products (moisturizers, mainly) since reading the book. Granted, a starting point for me was Ms. Howse's products, but if nothing, the information she gives makes you selective about what goes on your hair. Using the techniques she's given, even though at this point I would normally be running to the salon for another hair relaxing, I feel like my hair is soft and manageable with minimum breakage. I can only imagine what it will feel like when I do get it retouched! My advice, if you're getting the book, read it, identify and discard your bad habits, experiment with as many products as you're comfortable, and begin your journey towards healthier hair with a lot LESS breakage (in my experience).

She recommends reading the book over again. Strangely enough, even though I feel like I have all the concepts down, I still feel like I'd like to (I lent the book to someone, already). I'd start reading from around the 4th chapter, though. Quite frankly, some of the "myths" about black hair could have been dispelled in one page, although I guess she wanted to include lots of relevant research to back up her own ideas in order to help us make decisions for ourselves.

Lastly, don't forget this isn't a book about hair styling. This is about keeping the hair strands from being unhealthy and weak and breaking all over the place. How you choose to carry your collective hair after proper nourishing is a different topic not covered in this book.

Book Review: I'm Satisfied!
Summary: 5 Stars

Before purchasing this book I did a lot of research about it on the net. I had really bad hair breakage, and I wanted my daughters hair to be a lot healthier. So after reading the reviews, I decided to go on and purchase the book myself, and come to my own conclusions about her system. As she states in her book, her system is a common sense approach. After reading it, it all made sense, it contained alot of things I had not thought about in terms of hair care. It has now been 3 months of trying her approach to healthier hair and I must say it has done wonders on my hair as well as my daughters. I tried Cathys system without using her products. I simply did not have the time to wait for her product to come in throught the mail. I needed something RIGHT NOW! So, I went into Sally's and asked for a good protien conditioner for black hair as well as a good shampoo for dry damaged hair. They recommended Aphogee shampoo and ION conditioner, both of these have done an excellent job on our hair. I am very pleased! My daughters hair is so healthy and shiny. So in saying this, it is my observation that her approach to taking care of our hair is right on the money. I have yet to try her products (which I am sure work fine), but right now, I'm gonna keep going to Sally's. Hey Cathy, get your products over to Sally's Beauty Supply, then I will definately buy!! So I say if you were like me, and are unsure about how to take care of your hair, then buy this book!
