Book Review: The beginning if the "Undead" series

Betsy Taylor's birthday starts on a bad note and only gets worse. Between getting laid off from her secretarial job and having her father and the "ant" as she dubs her stepmother bail on her party, things can't be worse. Until she runs into the street after her wayward cat and finds herself staring down an oncoming SUV that is. Oh it gets worse. Next thing she knows, she wakes up in a coffin of all places with everyone thinking she's dead! Thus begins Betsy's Undead life.
As she adjusts to her new life as a vampire, many things become apparent. She's a rare breed of vampire who wakes up super strong, does not have the usual aversion to sunlight, does not need blood as badly as the next vampire, and feels not even the slightest twinge when confronted with things like crucifixes and holy water. As it turns out, Betsy could very well be the new Vampire Queen, as foretold by ancient prophecy. Is it any wonder, the foulest of the foul, vampire ruler Nostro wants her dead if she won't join him? Enter Eric SINclair whose name says it all. He can inspire Betsy to all manner of sins of the flesh. He's the sexiest man alive, or undead, she's ever met and he's the only one who can help her take on the nasty Nostro.
I had heard so much about this series since Undead and Unwed was originally released a few years ago that I decided it was finally time to give it a shot. I wanted to love this book, I really tried to love this book, unfortunately, this story did not appeal. Personal preferences I suppose. I'm not a big fan of making vampires romantic comedy because to me, vampires must be dark and brooding, maybe (but not always) bemoaning their fate until they find the one woman (or man) who can change it all. So I had a feeling this book would probably not strike me as strongly as the rest of MaryJanice Davidson's legions of fans. I was right. I just couldn't get into it, hence a lower rating, which I'm sure many people will hate me for. Ah well, such is life. But I am going to put aside my own preferences to give this book the review it should have.
Undead and Unwed was in fact a very well written story in the chick lit vein (pun intended), and provides numerous amusing moments for fans of this genre. Betsy is smart and sassy, and pretty content with her life, even in spite of the lack of bedmate potential for her age, until her doomed birthday. Her reaction to discovering what happened to her is downright hilarious, especially when she starts lamenting her dreadful "I wouldn't be caught dead in this" (which is exactly what did happen) attire and lousy non-designer shoes. Even more amusing is her downright refusal to be dragged in to the depressing side of immortal life and her thumbing her nose at many of the vampire rules. She makes her own rules, especially when she finds out she is one of a kind in the vampire community. Betsy's got spunk and she's not afraid to use it.
Betsy's relationships with her friends from her mortal life and people from her undead one provide a comedic bend as well. As she learns about her new abilities, her place in this heretofore unknown society and her duties to fight Nostro, she makes many errors that will cause readers to snicker. Then there is the hot and heavy sex appeal of Sinclair that oozes from the pages every time these two are together.
Nancy Wu does a great job of bringing Betsy to life. Her voice is perfect for Betsy and adds so much more personality to all the characters. I'd maybe be willing to listen to the rest of the Undead series in audio just for the pleasure of Wu's performance.
