Book Reviews of Undead and Unwelcome (Queen Betsy, Book 8)Book Review: Short & Fluffy Summary: 3 Stars
Well, here's another MJD book that I read in just a few hours, since the font is HUGE and there's really not much there. I've enjoyed this series from the beginning, but it's getting irritating that the publisher is putting what should be a short paperback book into a hardcover - it's really just not worth it.
I've put aside my disbelief and normally enjoy that there are vampires in Minnesota. We recently learned that the werewolves live in Cape Cod. Betsy's half-sister, Laura, is the daughter of the devil. Okay, I can deal. But now a baby with superpowers? Come on, MJD can't come up with anything else?
I was glad that the story involved around taking Antonia's body back to her pack, even though I'm still really irked that she got killed off in the first place. I was annoyed that hardly any mention was given to Garrett, who killed himself when Antonia was killed, but I guess I shouldn't have expected much else.
Overall, UNDEAD AND UNWELCOME was another quick read, but it's actually pretty boring, and doesn't add a whole lot to the series. Since I borrowed it from the library this time around, though, I guess I can't complain too much.
Book Review: Vamps, Weres and laughs, what more could you ask for. Summary: 3 Stars
In the last book Antonia gave her life to save Betsy from a crazed killer. In this book Betsy, Sinclair, BabyJon and Jessica are taking her body home to to Cape Cod and the Pack at Wyndham Manor. Betsy feels responsible for Antonia's death and wants to honor her memory by doing the right thing. What happens is that when they arrive at Cape Cod they find out they are being blamed for not protecting Antonia and they are going to have to face the Council and answer questions about Antonia's death. Mean time BabyJon is freaking out the wolf's. And back home Betsy's half sister, who is the devils daughter, has become a lot crazy and is killing vampires to make Betsy's life better. Marc keeps sending increasingly frantic e-mails to Betsy, that Betsy can't understand, because she has never bothered to figure out e-mail short hand. To sum it all up, we have Betsy dealing with a group of were-wolfs that could start a war with the vampires and Marc, a human doctor, back home dealing with Betsy's half sister the devils spawn. Catching up with the were's was great. What more can I say, it's Betsy book and it will make you smile.
Book Review: It's not you, MaryJanice, it's me Summary: 2 Stars
MaryJanice, we need to talk. It was good in the beginning; your Queen Betsy series was fresh and funny and your plotlines were filled with interesting twists and turns. But I feel that we've grown apart over the past few years, and what was OK for me in the beginning isn't what I want now.
What do I want, you ask? Well, if a book is 275 pages long, I'd like there to be at least 250 pages of action and dialogue. Not 150 fleshed out with repetitive information (how many times did you have to tell me about Antonia's death and Garrett suicide?). On the topic of dialogue, I'd like to see a complete sentence thrown in every couple of pages. And the whole "Laura freaking out" plotline -- we've done that. I'd like to see some of the characters actually grow and develop over the course of this series.
Face it, MaryJanice, we are in a rut. And while I can see that I've changed, you've just stayed the same.
MaryJanice, you are a nice person, and somewhere out there are legions of new readers just waiting to discover you. I just hope we can still be friends...
Book Review: I miss the fun of the earlier books Summary: 3 Stars
Like the immediately preceding book in the series (Undead and Unworthy (Queen Betsy, Book 7), this book is darker and less light-hearted than the earlier books in the series. I started reading the series precisely because it was a lighter, less serious type of vampire book and the darker trend is not as pleasant.
Most of this book has little to do with Betsy, Sinclair and the vampires and more with the Wyndam werewolf pack from some of the author's other books (see Derik's Bane (Berkley Sensation), Dead and Loving It and Dead Over Heels). It was OK but if the earlier books had this lack of fun, I doubt I would have read much of the series.
Book Review: Not bad once you accept it for what it is. Summary: 4 Stars
At first I was ready to fall into the complaining camp--the book is too short, the plot is thin, almost invisible, Betsy is too whiny, etc, etc but then I decided to just enjoy a fun, fast, funny summer read. Clearly the author set out to write the book in a certain style at this point long-time followers of the series should stop expecting something they are not going to get. Either you like the Betsy Queen of the Dead series or you don't. I like it and I thought this one did the job as well as any of the others. I was especially happy to see Marc getting more page space. I get a little annoyed when the the gay character is kept off screen and Marc has spent too much time in the emergency room away from the action. And while the climax at Cape Cod was a bit of an anti-climax, I found it emotionally satisfying because when you lose a dear friend in the end all you can do is grieve. So I enjoyed my short visit with Betsy and the gang and am looking forward to the next installment.
