Book Reviews of Undead and Unwelcome (Queen Betsy, Book 8)

Book Review: Undead and Boring
Summary: 2 Stars

Let me start by saying I love MJD and the fact that she live near me has nothing to do with it. That being said, what was going on in this book? I really did not find myself laughing outloud like normal when I read anything that MJD has written. The bouncing back and forth of emails between Mark @ home in St. Paul and Betsy (and her not caring enough to pick up the phone and find out what the hell was going on) drove me nuts. If for some reason the cell company told me that someone shut my phone off I would be getting to the bottom of it. I mean Betsy and Eric have lots of enemies you know. Something was up but she was paying not attention to anything around her. And Baby Jon what will he turn out to be??? The Ant had some strange bed fellows or maybe it was Betsy's dad that had something special going on? At this point I don't know and not sure if I will really care by the time the next book gets out. I am only teasing I will by the next book but man what a waste on this one.

Book Review: Too Bad...
Summary: 2 Stars

I assume MJD was trying to make Undead and Unwelcome a stand alone book by catching new readers up on everything from past books but what about her loyal readers who have followed the whole series?? It's a series, we do not need a complete background/back stories of the many characters. We want a new story from cover to cover.

I really enjoyed the first 7 books in this series. I read them one right after another in the past week and I thought they flowed well and I didn't get tired of them. Until this one! It was very annoying to get a paragraph here and there of the new story and then pages of rehashing stuff from the first books.

Although I enjoyed what new parts to the story that there were, I am still sorry I spent good money on what boiled down to nothing more than a novella. Definitely a book to get from the library. Then you can speed read, or just skip, all the repetitive stuff and just enjoy the little bit of new storyline that there was.

Book Review: Must Have Had Something Better to Do Than Write This Book
Summary: 3 Stars

Since I am a huge fan of this series and MJD I can only guess that she is either getting tired of writing this series or has too much on her plate. This could have been a GREAT book but it becomes mediocre at best due to a rushed and poorly told story. Will I buy the next one? Of course and this one should not be skipped but find it as used or in the bargain isle and maybe next time she will actually write the book we have been waiting for and not this half hearted effort that is somewhat of an insult to her fans. This could have been a wonderful book but it took parts of what could have been a couple of books and fragmented them terribly and left us hanging, missed details and just sloppy writing and where are the great laughs I buy this series for? MJD better get her act together and "dance with the one who brought ya" and drop some of the other lame projects. 3 Stars for not being a total failure (See Anita Blake and LKH)

Book Review: Reading with Tequila
Summary: 5 Stars

Undead and Unwelcome is written from two viewpoints, Betsy in Cape Cod with Sinclair, Jessica, BabyJon and the werewolves and Marc (through his diary entries) at home with Tina and Laura. I was skeptical at first, but the format worked really well and I think it brought a little something extra to the novel.

I loved the extra focus on Laura and it looks like her storyline is just starting to get good. It was also a rare pleasure to get into Marc's head a bit. We even got to know what the deal with BabyJon is. I just knew something had to be going on with that kid.

There were a couple of laugh out loud moments, including Betsy's awesome bitching about Marc's love of chat acronyms. On the totally scary side, Betsy and crew finally caught a glimpse of how bad things could get.

I have no idea what they could do next, but I'm sure MaryJanice Davidson had something fantastic up her sleeve.

Book Review: Undead and Unwelcome
Summary: 5 Stars

that has yet to be a Mary Janice Davidson book that I haven't liked. This one is no exception.

Returning Toni the werewolf's dead body from the previous book Undead and Unworthy back to her pack in Cape Cod we are reintroduced to not only Wyndham werewolves more popular characters like Morgan Le Fay from Derik's Bane but also characters from some of those anthology books that included a Queen Betsy/ Wyndham werewolf cross over. Betsy feels like she's a bit on trail and will do almost anything to avoid a vampire/werewolf war since the werewolves are well organized and she is not. Some of the more interesting spots is the way different were wolve react to Betsy kid who proves to have as special powers as her spawn of the devil sister who has decided to do some light house cleaning in the vampire elimination department with the help of her worshipers.
