Book Reviews of Unintended Consequences

Book Review: A very intriguing, well written book
Summary: 5 Stars

I highly recommend reading "Unintended Consequences". It is, at its root, a book about the fight for freedom and the cost of keeping that freedom.

I ordered "Unintended Consequences" from the publisher when it first came out and felt fortunate to receive a copy of the book signed by the author. I read the book twice. The first time was a marathon "can't put it down" read. After starting it, I found it to intriguing to stop reading until I had reached the end. I waited several months and then read it again, but at a slower pace, and I took notes this time.

I found the detail in this book to be amazing. John Ross knows what he's talking about when it comes to gun culture. I did some investigative research after the second reading. A lot of the information in my notes turned out to be factual pertaining to gun laws and historical events.

Another point about this book that I enjoyed was the way the author combined fact with fiction to the point that it was often very difficult to know if what you were reading actually happened or was fiction. Very catchy the way it was all interwoven.

Some people would find this book an uncomfortable read because of what it implies from both sides (as a citizen and as a member of law enforcement or government). I was at times uncomfortable while reading it, mainly because of the victimization of innocent people and at the erosion of our second amendment rights over the years, which this book does an excellent job of uncovering.

Some people would regard this book as being fanatical but the question has to be asked, "How is it people can justify fanatism about the environment, women's rights, animal rights, or whatever right they think is "right" but when that fanatism extends to the second amendment, suddenly that right is wrong?"

Book Review: More than just a GUN RIGHTS book!
Summary: 5 Stars

Mr. Ross has created a stunning, character driven story of tyranny and those who stand up to fight against it. This theme is woven through many different levels of characters and storylines. For thos previous reviewers who have loved the message but thought that it needed to be devoid of the sexual issues, or the Jewish story of the holocaust and how it could possibly been avoided, I ask that you re-evaluate your stance on these issues. The idea that the Holocaust might have been avoided if the Jewish people as a group had been more adept in the use of firearms is a gut wrenching and tragic idea. The point of the book is to allow people to have the knowledge so that something like that WILL NEVER happen again! The same goes for the so-called demeaning view of women and graphic sex. These sub-stories are aimed at the suppressive views of the right, not the Socialistic left. They are there to show you that intelligent, brave people that you would, or should, have as friends can act in a way that you may deem inappropriate at times. It shows that even strippers can be intelligent wonderful peoplethat you should not judge to quickly, just as you would not want to judge someone too quickly regarding race, or sex etc.. Tyranny comes from dogmatic thinking, let peoples actions speak for themselves. It is this mentality of trying to make people behave as you do in this country, socialy on the right(I.E. the drug war, abortion, prostitution, etc) and economically on the left that has created the huge frederal leviathan that we have today. To the man in Missouri, if a man such John Ross is really a man such as he portrays in his book by all means vote for him since he will allow you the freedom tho think he is a racist, sexist pig, something I"m not sure you would do in return.

Book Review: When Pushed To Far.
Summary: 5 Stars

This book, as thick as it is and as detailed as it is (much like some of Tom Clancy's and P. T. Deutermann's books), is a good read, educational, has a point of view, and is honest in what it says. It gave me look at the state of our country and caused me to feel shame and chargin. Shame over laws that make criminals rather than protect society and circumstances which turn well meaning people into zelots - an here I am talking about the books "heros" who are out zapping the "Feds" who they blame for their plight and the "Feds" who are caught-up in plying their trade in the manner in which they have been taught was proper and correct, and chagrin over the state of mind of some of the "Feds" in the book.

When I was in the Army I was taught to kill the enemy who was defined for me by my leaders. The "Feds" in this work, although not soldiers, seem to have been taught the same lessons and execute them with ruthless efficiency. From what I see on shows such as "Cops" we have SWAT teams all over the country operating like soldiers rather then keepers of the peace (remember the term Peace Officer when it was used to describe a sheriff?). How else can you understand the full body armor and black masks used in the incident at the prarie dog shoot (fictional) and some of the home break ins and shootings (historical) mentioned in the book? Maybe if the government folks discussed in the book had remembered that term they would not have been the subject of a novel of this scope.

This book will not leave you neutral on the subject of Federal regulation and the enforcement of that regulation. I have written members of Congress and joined the NRA, partly as a result of this book.

Book Review: Unintended Consequences
Summary: 4 Stars

I read this book due to my concern with the obvious erosion of the Bill of Rights that we see today. I wanted to see what others were thinking concerning the situation we've come to today. Although I could wax philosophical (as is pointed out in this book), it would be more constructive to simply say that a diverse percentage of the population perceives a problem in our legal and political systems today. As a Christian I am concerned with where world events are taking us. It seems that a great many with others with differing backgrounds are concerned as well. This book was very interesting and informative. Many of the events I am familiar with, while at times I had a bit of a time separating history and story line. This book is written from a purely libertarian point of view. I enjoyed it except for the kinky sex and setups of the victims (payback). I found them personally offensive. I would recommend this book with the caveat that you may be deeply offended by parts of it. Henry Bowmans decline into a dark character was a bit shocking at first. But quite plausible for a man forced into a war he did not want to be a part of. I believe the harder the Government pushes, the harder some of its citizens are going to push back. This is the main theme of the book. It only depends on each of us when we say, "enough is enough" and are willing to fight as our forefathers did. I gave it four stars because I believe that God, Guts and Guns really did make America great. I believe social (evil) forces are at work today to strip us of all three. I think this book addresses the later two. After reading this book you'll never look at governmental law enforcement agencies exactly the same again.

Book Review: Don't Start the Revolution without me....
Summary: 5 Stars

This is the best American novel since Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" with more believable characters, less laborious philosophy and better written. John Ross is a better author than Mailer's flashes of brilliance and right up there with Leon Uris' best efforts. To call it a page-turner is a cliche but true. Ross knows his subjects, guns, airplanes, skydiving, gun laws and bureaucrats, and most importantly has an innate sense of American Liberty which is being trampled by government.
Ross paints the landscape of American gun culture, steadily overshadowed by fascist laws and law enforcers until something has to give. The revolution which all of us know is coming with each usurpation of our freedoms; when it does start, will come upon the nation like wildfire. Even those of us who espouse NON-violence are forced to admit, there have been no bloodless revolutions in world history.
We live in a time, as John Adams called the 13 years before the firing at the Lexington-Concord bridge, which is the revolution in the minds of me. By the time the shot heard 'round the world was fired, American minds were made up. That is the background Ross sketches, and when the first shot is fired, our minds are made up.
This book is not recommended for trough feeding bureaucrats, jack-booted government thugs, or fascist control freaks. It is required reading for all Americans who know in their hearts something is dreadfully rotten in America, and that sooner or later they will need the courage to do something about it.
This is one of the finest books ever writ, it took me two years to track if down in a used book store. Buy it here, buy it now; you will not be disappointed.
