Book Reviews of Up Close and Dangerous: A Novel

Book Review: bleck--disgusting and unrealistic--flat characters--NOT WORTH YOUR MONEY!!!
Summary: 1 Stars

spare me! i was looking for a book that would show me how to survive in the wilderness and obviously i had no idea that linda howard was a romance writer. my fault, but that doesn't make this book any good.

seriously, the "scenes" are disgustingly graphic and really, really gross. its really not realistic that they would want to marry each other after how many days (six or seven) compared to how they used to hate each other. i hate the pilot guy because he's just in it for her body. i hate bailey because she is just totally being used and has no clue. i hate pretty much everything about this book.

if you like perverted, disgusting graphic romance, an unrealistic storyline, and flat characters that are easily hateable, then read this book. if not (like me) than know that you made a good choice in passing this one up.

Book Review: More Romance than Action ... And That's OK!
Summary: 4 Stars

This LH edition is action-lite in an odd way, but the romance is really good. Baily and Cam have a deep and intriguing connection based on their life-or-death situation after a plane crash. I like that the heroine gets to save the hero (a nice switch on the "damsel in distress" idea) and how their not-so-nice opinions of each other change as they struggle to survive the wilderness. Howard does go a little overboard on the survivalist details, and the action components are a little predictable. However, I really enjoyed the romance in the story - it seems believable and sweet. These are two people who need each other, and I really enjoyed their story. That being said, it was not my favorite LH book, so I kind of wished that I had waited for paperback. If you do buy it, go in with your eyes open and just enjoy the romance.

Book Review: not as bad as it was made out to be
Summary: 3 Stars

I have to say something after reading all these negative reviews. I feel that this book is not as bad as it was made out to be. Sure it is not in the usual "mold" of LH, but that makes it less boring. As a romantic suspense, the ending is almost pre-determined, but I actually like all the details that a lot of the reviewers detested. I think the details make the book more believable and "flesh it out" more, instead of the usual "beauty meets hunk and love at first sight" kind of nonsense. I do agree that the motive part is a bit weak and that the ending is a bit rushed. If you are looking for just an entertaining book, by no means a classic, this book is good. I give it 3.5 stars.

Book Review: Up Close with Cardboard Characters and Dangerously Dull Action
Summary: 1 Stars

With a title like 'Up Close and Dangerous' and a nice interesting concept just built for suspense, romance and action - this book amazingly fails to deliver on all fronts.

It's hard to believe that with all the opportunities provided of two characters perilously crash-landed in the bitter cold of Idaho that this could be THAT dull. But, dull is exactly what the story, the cardboard characters and the writing deliver. Not a day after their crash - and I was already wondering "Who Cares?".

Bottom Line: DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR MONEY. For romance and page-turning suspense - look elsewhere. There are just too many better options.

Book Review: A little bit above average, but another step back for Linda Howard
Summary: 3 Stars

Like most people who have reviewed this book, I didn't think it was a bad book. It was fairly entertain, a very quick read...and um...

But it did focus more on wilderness survival (very interesting, but not what I expected the focus to be on) than the interplay between the characters. And the interaction between the characters just didn't do it for me. I never felt any real connection to either of them, or between the two. For me, it felt more like...well, we're stuck here, now what?

I've noticed a decline in LH's books, as they become less endearing and even more formulaic. But that won't stop me from buying the next one.
