Book Reviews of Vision in White (The Bride Quartet, Book 1)Book Review: A romance lover's kind of book! Summary: 5 Stars
Nora Roberts takes a break from her mysteries, thrillers, and intrigue for some straight-up, no-holds barred romance with the premiere book in her Brides Quartet series.
The premise is simple but sweet: Four childhood friends - Parker Brown, Mackensie Elliot, Emmaline Grant, and Laurel McBane - have grown up to run a premiere wedding business called Vows. The first book introduces us to Mac's story. Mac is, to use my description, the funky one of the four. The photographer, she came into it as a child because of a gift of a camera, and used it to annoy a family member, who would make comments about the irresponsible, but wealthy father who gave her such a gift at her young age. The girls would play "Wedding Day" marrying each other, animals, whatever. A photo involving the girls and a surprise blue butterfly would inspire her later career.
Fast forward to Mac as an adult. She handles pictures for a bubbly bride-to-be's wedding. In the process, the bride's brother, Carter Maguire mistakenly goes to Mac's home (on the same property as the main building/home, where Vows is located), to deliver something, and quickly becomes reacquainted with Mac, his crush as a geeky teen. The typical "geek who worships the girl who never noticed" is part of the angle, true, but what could be a cliché is avoided in part by the way they meet again.
Carter is not your usual slick, smooth operator. Ms. Roberts has made an extremely appealing, sweet, and yes, awkward hero, a high school English teacher who has a passion for his students, is a bit socially out of his depth, yet sexy enough to go after who he wants - Mac. He even has a three-legged cat!
This would-be romance is complicated by Mac's issues with the absent trust-fund father and a selfish narcissistic mother who basically is the daughter to Mac's mother, spoiled and self centered. It is her mother who is Mac's biggest obstacle to her own happiness. Her mother goes through men like kleenex, leaving Mac jaded and with deep emotional scars. Luckily, her friendship with Laurel, Parker, and Emma - and Carter's sweet but firm determination - seeks to ensure Mac gets out of her own way for her happy ending.
I have seen some reviews where it has been said there is not a lot of conflict in this series. In a sense, maybe. Not a lot of external stuff. But I think the flaws of the characters and their differing backgrounds are enough of a challenge, and more true to life, anyway.
If you just want a sugar rush without the calories, I think this series fits the bill admirably! The world could always use a dose of fluff.
And on a side note, whoever designed the covers for this series should be applauded. They are simply gorgeous. And fits the mood of the Bride Quartet series perfectly!
Enjoy. Just be sure to order the three (out of four) books available now together, because once "Vision In White" is over, you *will* want to go on to Emma's story in "Bed of Roses" and Laurel's story in "Savor the Moment"! (Parker's story, "Happy Ever After" is due out in November.) One more side note, the men introduced in "Vision In White" also play key roles in other books in the series later on, so read closely!

#1 New York Times bestselling author Nora Roberts presents her first trade original-a novel of love, friendship, and family-Book One in the Bride Quartet. Wedding photographer Mackensie "Mac" Elliot is most at home behind the camera, but her focus is shattered moments before an important wedding rehearsal when she bumps into the bride-to-be's brother...an encounter that has them both seeing stars. A stable, safe English teacher, Carter Maguire is definitely not Mac's type. But a casual fling might be just what she needs to take her mind off bridezillas. Of course, casual flings can turn into something more when you least expect it. And Mac will have to turn to her three best friends-and business partners-to see her way to her own happy ending.
