Book Reviews of Visions of Heat (Psy-Changelings, Book 2)Book Review: Very much like the first..... Summary: 4 Stars
I really like this series. It is edgy, unique, complicated, and completely sci-fi, paranormal to the extreme. My complaint with this one is that it's very much the same plot as the first book "slave to sensation". Fortunately for this book, I liked the characters a little better in this one.
Faith is a F-PSY. She is isolated and protected because she can predict the future which has proved very financially lucrative for the Psy race and council.
Vaughn is a changeling. Half jaguar half man, but the jaguar side is stronger. You learn why as the sadness of his childhood is revealed. The romance between Faith and Vaughn is almost secondary to the plot of the story. This is a series that primarily focuses on the two different species..the psy and the changelings, and how they interact with eachother both within and outside their species.
As I said in the previous book's review. This is a complicated world comprised of a psychic, telekinetic world in which the battlefield is comprised mostly of the mind. Both books have killers out there and it is up to both heroines to stop the killing by finding the killer before he strikes again. I really hope that the next book has a different plot line because although I liked this book and it's prequel, I'm ready for something else.
I did appreciate the author's ability to take the time necessary to develop the relationship between Vaughn and Faith. Psy's and changeling's are so fundamentally opposite in their emotional capability and needs as a result of the "silence" protocol that has rendered Psy devoid of emotion, that to think that the highly touch and emotion centered changeling could easily mate with a psy is highly improbable. How Singh collides these two cultures is amazing, believable, and beautiful.
Book Review: Great continuation! Summary: 4 Stars
I know this is the second book in the series, but I actually read it fourth because it wasn't stocked in the stores when I was buying the others. Of the four, it's my least favorite, but my overall enjoyment of this series has not diminished one whit. The story told here in Visions of Heat is still strong, with lots of additional development into the Psy/Changeling world. We learn more about the Psy and their increasingly shaky control of their species. Singh starts to layer in some series-wide suspense, with the addition of Kaleb Krychek as a possible addition to the Council. (And having read the other books in this series, I have to say that Kaleb continues to intrigue me. On the surface, he seems villainous, but I can't help but suspect that he's not so much a villain as an antihero, and I'm enjoying watching Singh explore his moral ambiguity.) The weakness of this book is Faith, but I think that's just an emotional reaction on my part. I had a hard time warming up to her and her Psy coldness. With Sascha it was easier, because Sascha was already tapping into and acknowledging (and even embracing) her emotions. I think Faith's programming was harder to overcome, although Singh did so successfully, little by little over the course of the book. I also thought that Vaughn was possibly just a bit too pushy, although he maintained all along that it was what Faith needed, and ultimately he was right.
As I read through this series, I continue to be impressed by Singh's obvious forethought with respect to her worldbuilding. She definitely seems to be driving this vehicle, rather than letting it drive her, and as someone who has seen too many series unravel due to lack of long-range planning, I really appreciate that. Can't wait for more!
Book Review: Visions of Heat Summary: 4 Stars
I just recently got into this series in the past month, starting with Lucas in Slave to Sensation, and, while I really liked him, I have to say I loved Vaughn! All that golden hair and those golden eyes. So sexy!
Vaughn is so alpha male, so primal and completely sensual. Compared to Lucas, he is more of a loner and more animalistic since his animal the jaguar is closer to the surface, making him seem more wild, dangerous and untamed. I love how he growls, how possessive and how protective he is of Faith. He is territorial, demanding, and pushy.
He is determined to possess her, and there is no way he is letting her go. When Vaughn first meets Faith, he is fascinated by her, her hair, her skin, and he can't help but touch her. He cannot understand his preoccupation with this Psy woman. Why can he not stop thinking about her?
There is not a lot of sex in the book, but there is so much delicious sexual tension and chemistry. I can really feel Vaughn's desire for Faith and Faith's longing for him, despite her fear of letting go. As Faith experiences these dark visions, Vaughn is there to pull her back and to watch out for her.
I enjoyed this story more than STS, and that might be because the first book had more information to get through, more to piece together. In this second book, I already know who is who and what they can do, etc. so that made it easier to read, for me at least.
Visions of Heat expands on the relationships seen in book 1, and I do like seeing Lucas and Sascha darling again. It also gives us more of Judd and his abilities and what his story might be. I'm really looking forward to seeing how some of the other characters develop- Dorian, Clay, Judd, and especially Hawke.
Book Review: VERY enjoyable. 4.5 stars Summary: 4 Stars
I appreciate a series that completes every book with it's own story, yet still relies on the foundation built by the first. Visions of Heat does that, perfectly. This book was more of a grand love story than the thriller of the first novel (Slave to Sensation), but still enhanced the landscape of the world of the Psy and the Changlings. All the characters of the first book are present and accounted for in this one.
Generally, I don't like Alpha men. Vaughn seriously fits the profile. Arrogant, superior, stubborn, persistent, demanding, possessive. He relies on his animal instincts, touches without permission, pushes past acceptable boundaries. In a human love story, this would irritate the hell out of me, but when written in the context of his jaguar persona it's comfortable to accept. Of course it helps that Vaughn is also sexy, gentle, loving and protective.
Faith Nightstar is a strong heroine. Fragile but brave, intelligent but willing to learn, loyal almost to a fault. She finds her salvation in Vaughn, and pushes her own boundaries, character growth at it's best. The process she goes through satisfies beyond the norm. The love scenes between Faith and Vaughn are beautifully written, you feel the attraction, the love, the commitment they make to each other.
Good suspense, more erotic than the first (in my opinion). PG-17 for the love scenes (very hot, but not gratuitous), no annoying cliffhangers, but enough interest generated to continue with the series. I suggest reading the first book to get a better handle of the world and previous characters created by the author, or too many nuances will be lost. A brief teaser for the next novel comes at the end of this one.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.
Book Review: Second book in this series doesn't dissapoint. **HOT** (B+ Grade) Summary: 5 Stars
Visions of Heat is the sequel to Slave of Sensation in this new series of the future, so the only downside for this book is that you must read the first in this series to understand everything that is going on.
Again we enter the world of Psy, a telepathic race that has been programmed to show no emotion. Faith is one that can tell the future and finds out her sister has been murdered. She is starting to feel things she shouldn't and wants to find who murdered her sister.
Vaughn is a shiftshaping jaguar who is more of a loner and is scarred by his past. But when these two come together, the passion is beyond intense and their future is now cemented in each other.
If you are a fan of the future and sci-fi romance element, Nalini Singh is well becoming a pro at this genre. Their are very intense feelings between the two main charcters and watch out when they come together! Hot hot hot.
The book is very sexy and the world around them has been written in a very original way.
Many characters from the first book are shown including the heroine and hero of the first book.
Also if you are a fan of Robin Owens, you will also love this book.
