Book Reviews of Visual Basic 6 for Dummies (for Windows)Book Review: This book is now obsolete. Summary: 4 Stars
I bought this book and quickly discovered that Visual Book 6 is no longer the latest tool for VB programming. Microsoft has introduced Visual Basic 2005--which you can download free from Microsoft.
Consequently, any book on VB6 is really a waste of your time. You would just end up converting your VB6 code to MS VB 2005. Why waste time learning old commands? Go right to the latest.
If you want a great book on MS VB 2005 try Michael Halvorson Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Step by Step.
Book Review: Replace the lousy jokes with explanations, please Summary: 2 Stars
If the lousy jokes were replaced with theory and explanations, this book would have been great! The book fails to explain more difficult topics in a good matter. The chapters describing Classes and Databases should have been left out or rewritten. Actually, these topics are not very difficult, but the reader makes them difficult by comparing it to dishwashers and cars, and by telling dreadfully bad jokes. Jokes are OK, but I rather read 200 pages of good explanations than 400 pages where 200 of them are rubbish.
Book Review: Showcase Of Learning Visual Basic... Summary: 5 Stars
This book is the showcase for learning Visual Basic. Comes with Blow to Blow action to give the reader a better understanding to writing code. The topics are designed to give you a heads up view, and have fun learning about Visual Basic. After reading this book, I'm convinced it's ranked in the top 5 for learning this subject. The author relays great tips for starting out, and sets the stage for more advanced topics in other books to "leap frog" your way into developing your own applications.
Book Review: Excellent for Newbies, but don't expect more!!!!!! Summary: 4 Stars
I found this to be a great start for someone who was just familar with the windows enviroment. I found it to be a little disappointing when it came to anything more than the basics though. If you are looking for a book to get your feet wet, then this is the book for you. If you are looking for something with databasing or active-X in mind, get a different book. Christopher Whitehead P.S. If you are a newbie, I would suggest buying this book first, that's why I gave it the 4 stars..
Book Review: This is a great start to learning VB programming. Summary: 4 Stars
Even if you have no programming experience, if you are familiar with Windows applications and their basic characteristics, you can learn a lot from this book. Minor experience with Visual Basic is a plus as this book will polish the skills you already have and teach you the logic behind object-oriented application development in terms most of us can understand. Those who have had major exposure to VB however, should not buy this book. It will not make you a VB expert.
