Book Reviews of Voice of the Violin (Inspector Montalbano Mysteries)

Book Review: "Sell me a violin, mister, of old mysterious wood
Summary: 4 Stars

Sell me a fiddle that has kissed dark nights on the forehead where men kiss sisters they love." Carl Sandburg.

"The Voice of the Violin" is the fourth installment in Andrea Camilleri's Inspector Montalbano series. It is witty, entertaining and a more than worthy volume in the series.

While en route from Vigata, the fictional Sicilian city where the series is set, to Florida (another Sicilian town) for a funeral, Montalbano's driver manages to run into a parked car. This leads Montalbano to discover the dead body of an attractive young woman in a state of undress in a house that was not quite fully constructed yet. As the story progresses, Montalbano is tasked with investigating the case, is taken off the case, and then proceeds to pursue, with the help of `his men' his own investigation in an `off-the-record' capacity. As to the title of the book, yes, a violin does have some significance to the mystery here.

The investigation of the crime seems straightforward enough but this is Sicily, and in Andrea Camilleri's, Sicily there are no straight lines. There are political complications, complications brought on by the possible knowledge of the Mafia of facts about the crime and its aftermath, and the Byzantine but symbiotic relationship enjoyed by the police, politicians, and organized crime.

As with all of Montalbano books I've read to date, there is more to the story than may be inferred by a plot outline. Salvo Montalbano is a very appealing character. He is a Sicilian with a temper. He doesn't suffer fools gladly even when those fools happen to be authority figures. He has an enormous appetite for good food and each book contains reference to his never ending search for a tasty, well-prepared dish. His relationship with his long-time, long-distance lover, Livia, also plays a recurring role in the series and in "Voice of the Violin", the tension between them over a boy that came into their lives in the previous volume reaches a crescendo. Last but not least is the social and political setting. Sicily seems to come to life in these books. I can't help but feel as I read these books that even though they are clearly fiction that the flavor of the social and political life provided by Camilleri in this series is dead-solid-perfect. When you combine these factors with an intriguing plot the result is a tasty stew that even Inspector Montalbano would devour with gusto.

Summary of Voice of the Violin (Inspector Montalbano Mysteries)

Inspector Montalbano, praised as ?a delightful creation? (USA Today), has been compared to the legendary detectives of Georges Simenon, Dashiell Hammett, and Raymond Chandler. As the fourth mystery in the internationally bestselling series opens, Montalbano?s gruesome discovery of a lovely, naked young woman suffocated in her bed immediately sets him on a search for her killer. Among the suspects are her aging husband, a famous doctor; a shy admirer, now disappeared; an antiques-dealing lover from Bologna; and the victim?s friend Anna, whose charms Montalbano cannot help but appreciate. But it is a mysterious, reclusive violinist who holds the key to the murder.
